dc.description.abstractAim: In this study, it was aimed to determine the knowledge status of folic acid, the awareness of folic acid, the use of active folic acid, whether it was used before pregnancy and the factors affecting the use of folic acid in pregnants who applied to the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic. Material and Methods: Between 15 and 31 January 2017, 355 women who applied to Duzce University Medical Faculty Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic forms the universe. Sample was not selected. The questionnaire consisting of 17 questions was conducted by face to face interview technique on 142 pregnant women who accepted to participate the survey. Results: The mean age of 142 participants who participate the study was 28.2±6.1 (min=17, max=42). Women who participated the study were pregnant average 2.4±1.4 (min=1, max=6). The mean age at first pregnancy was 22.9±4.8 (min=14, max=39). The number of women who expressed folic acid correctly was 55 (38,7%), who think that they have fed enough food which include folic acid was 82 (57.7%), and who knew the correct definition of neural tube defect (NTD) was 11 (7.7%). In the study group, there were 1 female (0.7%) who gave birth to NTD in her previous pregnancy. 32 (22.5%) females knew that using folic acid could reduce or eliminate the risk of NTD formation. İn terms of time to use folic acid, 66 women (46.5%) used folic acid only in the early period of pregnancy and 17 women (12.0%) used folic acid both before pregnancy and early pregnancy. After the questionnaire was administered, participants were trained in the use of folic acid. Conclusion: This study was conducted in the Duzce University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and found that folic acid awareness, folic acid knowledge level and folic acid use of pregnant women were low. Health education should be given to the public to extend the use of folic acid in pregnancies and increase awareness about folic acid prevent NTD. © 2017, Duzce University Medical School.
