Fear of happiness: religious and psychological implications in Turkey
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2019) Tekke, Mustafa; Özer, Bayram
The fear of happiness is culturally influenced, especially in conservative communities, in which there is an indirect suggestion that happiness should be restrained or that it should remain hidden. This study evaluated the fear of happiness of university students (N = 211) in Turkey by administering a collection of questionnaires; the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, Fear of Happiness Scale, and the Piety and Hope components from Religious Orientation Scale (There is no faith bias affecting the fear of happiness). There was no association identified between piety and fear of happiness, but hope and life satisfaction were found to be negatively associated with fear of happiness. It is indirectly implied that cultural-oriented factors than religious values might be potentially playing a major role in the happiness perception. Future research should include the factor of superstitious belief in order to differentiate the level of its impact on fear of happiness.

Development and validation of instructional leadership questionnaire
(Ardabil Industrial Management Inst, 2017) Akram, Muhammad; Kiran, Sobia; İlğan, Abdurrahman
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate instructional leadership questionnaire based on head teachers' perceptions of instructional leadership practices. Based on rigorous literature review of the seminal research works and models on instructional leadership, a 40-items questionnaire grouped into seven dimensions was developed. Content validity of the questionnaire was ensured through opinions of two panels of experts and practitioners. Pilot study was conducted on 30 head teachers from rural and urban high schools to get their feedback on the language clarity, understandings, and the reliability. The alpha level of 0.75 based on pilot testing data provided validity evidence of the questionnaire. Later on, the researchers collected data from 164 head teachers, selected conveniently, from Okara and Lahore districts as Pakistan cities. Out of 164 head teacher, 85 were male and 79 were female; 78 were rural and 86 were urban; and 83 were directly selected from the selection boards while 81 were promoted to the head teacher positions. The overall internal consistency of the 40 items was 0.95 and alpha reliability of the seven dimensions ranged from 0.78 to 0.87. Exploratory factor analysis yielded seven subscales such as instructional resource provider, maintaining visible presence, teachers' professional development, maximizing instructional time, monitoring student progress, giving feedback on teaching and learning process, and curriculum implementer. Significant positive correlations were found between all the seven dimensions of the questionnaire. Further, t-test for independent samples revealed that male and female, rural and urban, and selected and promoted head teachers significantly differ on the seven dimensions of the instructional leadership questionnaire, meaning that the questionnaire demonstrated variance across gender, location, and head teachers' upgradation based on selection or promotion. The findings suggested initial evidence of validity and reliability of the instructional leadership questionnaire that can be used in school settings. (C) AIMI Journals

Dark personality traits and problematic smartphone use: The mediating role of fearful attachment
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2019) Balta, Sabah; Jonason, Peter; Denes, Amanda; Emirtekin, Emrah; Tosuntaş, Şule Betül; Kırcaburun, Kağan; Griffiths, Mark D.
Recently, empirical research has shown dark personality traits (i.e., Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, sadism, spitefulness) to be associated with problematic and addictive online behaviors. However, their direct relationships with problematic smartphone use (PSU) have yet to be examined. The present study investigated the direct and indirect associations of dark personality traits with PSU via fearful and dismissing attachment styles among 546 participants. Results indicated that men had higher scores on measures assessing dark personality traits and women had higher PSU. Narcissism and spitefulness were directly associated with PSU in the total sample, men, and women. Machiavellianism was indirectly associated with PSU via fearful attachment among men and sadism was directly and indirectly associated with PSU via fearful attachment among women. Findings suggest that dark personality traits may play a contributory role in higher PSU (with different traits having different effects among men and women), and that attachment styles partially explain the relationship between dark traits and PSU.

Maslow’un İhtiyaçlar Hiyerarşisinin En Son Düzeyleri: Kendini Gerçekleştirme ve Kendini Aşmışlık
    (Ani Publishing, 2019) Tekke, Mustafa

Teachers' psychological well-being: a comparison among teachers in USA, Turkey and Pakistan
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017) Özü, Öykü; Zepeda, Sally; Ilgan, Abdurrahman; Jimenez, Albert M.; Ata, Atakan; Akram, Muhammed
Assessing teachers' psychological well-being (PWB) is the first step in protecting teacher's mental health and providing them an environment that helps flourish their professional and personal development. It is also crucial for good teacher-student interactions, which in turn, may affect student self-efficacy, social abilities, and even mental health. However, research about the subject is limited in the literature, and it lacks comparison of the levels of PWB among teachers from different countries. This study has primarily focused on the variations in teachers' PWB from three different countries: U.S.A., Turkey, and Pakistan. In total, 403 teachers from U.S.A., 990 teachers from Turkey, and 715 from Pakistan completed the survey that contained demographic questions and the PWB scale. Results indicated that the U.S. sample had the highest PWB means followed by teachers in Turkey and in Pakistan, respectively. Results are discussed in light of the literature and implications are presented.

Teachers' Expectations and School Administration: Keys of Better Communication in Schools
    (Ani Yayincilik, 2015) Aslanargün, Engin
Problem Statement: The quality of education carried out in schools depends largely on the performance of teachers and school principals in cooperation. It is possible to say that a qualified education of students depends on the performance and compliance degree of these two groups. In this process, teachers' having the primary responsibility for teaching in compliance with school administration and supported by administration is very critical. For a more qualified education/teaching school, principals should support their teachers as an institutional leader responding to their expectations and needs. Purpose of the Study: The aim of this study is to determine teachers' expectations from school principals so that they can do their jobs better. Teachers included in the study were asked what they have expected and hoped from principals while they were teaching. Method: A qualitative research methodology was employed, using phenomenology to collect and analyze the interpretations and meanings of teachers' expectations as drawn from their responses to open ended semi structured questions. The research group consists of volunteer teachers who were employed in the district and province of Duzce city in Turkey. Teachers were invited to fill out the open ended form consisting of a single question via e-mail. A total of 677 volunteer teachers participated in this study: some of whom gave more than a single response, whereas some preferred short responses. Findings and Results: In the finding section of the study, which aimed to investigate and analyse the teachers' expectations and opinions, a major category and eight subcategories were identified. When analyzing the expectations of teachers from principals, it was evident that nearly onefourth of the expectations were centered on the subcategories of comprehension and support (25 percent). Subsequently, satisfaction with the current administration (21 percent), leadership (13 percent), justice and equality (12 percent), communication (11 percent), physical equipment (9 percent), school development (9 percent) and no expectation (2 percent) followed. Consequently, value based informal behaviors such as appreciation, cooperation, consulting, respecting, fairness, confidence, and motivation were emphasized most often by the teachers. Conclusions and Recommendations: The concepts and themes generally focused on human relationships, meaning that behaviors of principals should be shaped by considerations of leadership and communication. Communication, empathy, and initiative are the concepts teachers paid the most attention to throughout the study, and these are the psychological characteristics that principals need to adapt most whatever their preferred leadership style has been. Having a considerate style of administration and providing support for teachers were the core recommendations of the research.
