    Assessing the impact of cutting season on the yield, essential oil, and composition of spearmint cultivars

    The objective of this study was to assess the productivity, oil content, and composition of two spearmint species, Mentha spicata and M. suaveolens, during different harvesting periods in the continental climate of the Lake Region of Turkey. The study was conducted during at a two-year period, including both summer and autumn cutting seasons in 2016 and 2017. The investigation revealed a significant increase in yields during the summer harvest season. Carvone emerged as the predominant compound, with the exception of the Pinedo cultivar. Carvone contents of the genotypic variations were from 28.0% to 51.0%, exhibiting heightened concentrations during the initial harvest, followed by a subsequent reduction during the autumn harvest season. The major components of the Pinedo was piperitenone oxide, accounting for 67.0% of the oil, and underwent a decline during the autumn harvest.

    Effects of different nitrogen doses on thymoquinone and fatty acid composition in seed oil of black cumin ( Nigella sativa L.)

    Black cumin, Nigella sativa L. belonging to Ranunculaceae, is a valuable medicinal plant because of the curative effects of seed and oil. Despite studies on black cumin, there are few studies on the effects of nitrogen on fatty acid composition, no records on thymoquinone yield, and the thymoquinone content of the seed oil. In this study, the effects of different nitrogen doses on the seed oil yield, thymoquinone ratio/yield, and fatty acid compositions were investigated. Field studies with nitrogen doses (0, 40, 60, 80, and 100?kg/ha) were studied using the randomized plot design. As a result of the research, nitrogen doses significantly affected the oil and thymoquinone yields while insignificant on the thymoquinone ratio. The highest oil yield with 501.6 kg/ha was obtained from 80?kg/ha of the nitrogen doses, while the highest thymoquinone yield with 10.24?kg/ha was obtained from the control plots. Thymoquinone yields were in the same statistical group with other nitrogen doses, except for means of 100?kg/ha nitrogen doses. Linoleic, oleic, and palmitic acids were major fatty acids of black cumin, and their variations were insignificant in nitrogen applications. The values of butyric, capric, and linolenic acids varied significantly in different nitrogen doses. As a result of the study, it was determined that the highest oil yield was obtained from 80?kg/ha nitrogen application. It has been determined that nitrogen doses above 60–80?kg/ha should be avoided for the seed oil and thymoquinone yields in black cumin.

    Isparta ekolojik koşullarında yetiştirilen spearmint grubu nane klon ve çeşitlerinin verim ve kalite özelliklerinin belirlenmesi

    Nane, Lamiaceae familyasına ait uçucu yağ ve baharat amacıyla üretilen Mentha türlerine verilen genel bir isimdir. Bu çalışmada, Spearmint grubu nane türleri içerisinde yer alan 4 yabancı ticari çeşit ile bir yerli çeşit adayının Isparta ekolojik koşullarında verim özellikleri incelenmiştir. Tarla denemeleri 2016 ve 2017 yıllarında tesadüf blokları deneme desenine göre üç tekrarlamalı olarak kurulmuştur. Çalışmada her vejetasyon döneminde biçimler birleştirilerek toplam yeşil herba, kuru herba, kuru yaprak ve uçucu yağ verimleri incelenmiştir. Çalışma sonucu iki yıl ortalamasına göre; yeşil herba, kuru herba ve kuru yaprak verimleri sırasıyla 1818.8-2148.8 kg/da, 506.3-616.2 kg/da, 295.8-386.9 kg/da aralıklarında değişiştir. Uçucu yağ verimi ise 5.40-8.48 L/da arasında olmuştur. Çalışma sonucunda kuru yaprak verimleri bakımından klon ve çeşitler arasında fark önemsiz olmasına rağmen en yüksek yaprak verimi Crispa çeşidinden alınırken, Applemint ve Maracco çeşitlerinde uçucu yağ verimleri diğerinden önemli miktarda yüksek olmuştur. Bu nedenle Applemint, Maracco çeşitlerinin bölgede uçucu yağ üretimi için önerilebileceği belirlenmiştir

    Molecular Characterization and Genetic Relationships in Different Mint (Mentha L.) Species with ISSR Marker Technique

    Abstract: In the study, it was aimed to determine the molecular characterization and genetic relationships of Mentha species obtained from different countries and regions at the molecular level and to ensure the sustainability of these species. For this purpose, ISSR marker technique, which is effective in detecting polymorphism and genetic variation within and between Mentha species, was used. In the study a total of 460 allelic bands were detected, and all bands were found to be 100% polymorphic. The maximum number of bands was produced by the ISSR7 primer (25), but the minimum number of bands was produced by the ISSR12 primer (13). The highest PIC (Polymorphism Information Content) value was detected in the ISSR3 primer (0.521) but the lowest PIC value was determined in the 903 primer (0.203). Molecular datas were analyzed using the NTSYSpc 2.02 software and it was determined that the mint species were divided into two main groups. In the results obtained, it was determined that there was no relationship between the genetic diversity and geographical origins, and the populations from different geographical regions were in the same clusters. In the study, it was concluded that there was a significant molecular diversity among the species, and that some Mentha clones, which are defined by morphological features and still remain taxonomically uncertain, were belong to which species at the molecular level. Therefore, it is insufficient to classify species with morphochemical, morphological and phenotypic characteristics. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc. 2024.     Nane türlerinde (Mentha arvensis L. ve Mentha x piperita L.) Destilasyon Atıklarının Yün Boyama Potansiyelinin Belirlenmesi

    Amaç: Dünyada nane türlerinden elde edilen uçucu yağ miktarı Citrus türlerinden sonra ikinci sırayı almaktadır. Mevcut çalışmada, en fazla yetiştiriciliği yapılan nane türlerinin (Mentha arvensis L. ve Mentha x piperita L.) destilasyon sonrası sıvı atıklarında yün boyama potansiyelleri araştırılmıştır. Materyal ve Metot: Çalışmada boyama yünlerde, mordansız ve mordanlı boyama olarak iki farklı şekilde yapılmıştır. Mordanlı boyama da iki farklı mordan (bakır sülfat ve demir sülfat) kullanılmıştır. Mordanlı boyamalarda boyama ve mordanlama işlemi beraber yapılmıştır. Boyama işleminden sonra örnekler ılık suyla yıkanıp durulanmış ve oda koşullarında kurutulmuştur. Bu örneklerde iki farklı uygulama (yıkama öncesi ve yıkama sonrası) sonrasında renk ölçerle renk değerleri (L*,a*,b*,C* ve h?) belirlenmiş ve renk teşhisleri yapılmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmada boyama yapılan yünlerde renk değişimleri tür ve mordanlara göre farklık göstermiştir. Mentha piperita ile yapılan boyamalarda renklerin doygunluk değerleri (C* değerleri) M. arvensis’ten yüksek bulunmuştur. Ayrıca demir sülfat mordanlı boyamalarda, bakır sülfat mordanlı boyamalardan daha koyu renk tonları elde edilmiştir. Çalışmada yıkama öncesi ve yıkama sonrası uygulamalarda değerlerde değişmeler gözlenmiş, iki türde de yıkama sonrası demir sülfat mordanında C* doygunluk değerleri artmış ve daha canlı renk tonları elde edilmiştir. Sonuç: Çalışma ile destilasyon sonucu sıvı atıkların, alım gücü yüksek çevre dostu ürünlerde boyama amacıyla kullanılabileceği belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca konuyla ilgili ilave çalışmaların gerekliliği anlaşılmıştır.

    Studies on black cumin genotypes of Turkiye: Agronomy, seed and thymoquinone yields

    Black cumin, Nigella sativa L. belonging to Ranunculaceae family, is a valuable medicinal plant due to the taste and curative effects of seed and oil. Although there are studies on the agronomical and chemical characterization of black cumin, there is not any study on the thymoquinone yield, and the thymoquinone content in the cold pressed seed oil. The study investigated thymoquinone content in cold-pressed seed oil and the thymoquinone yield per hectare of Turkish black cumin genotypes from two cultivated Nigella species, N. sativa and N. damascena, along with their agronomic properties, seed yield, and fatty acid composition. Field studies were carried out in the same climatic and soil conditions in a randomized block design for two years. The fatty acid composition of the seed oils was analyzed by gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID), and the amount of thymoquinone in the cold-pressed seed oil was analyzed by the Waters Acquity UPC2 system. As a result of the field and analytic studies, significant differences were observed in other agronomic characteristics, except for the number of branches. In the studies, the highest seed yield was obtained in the Genotype 3 with 2.690 kg/ha, Genotype 17 with 2.227 kg/ha and Genotype 16 with 2.003 kg/ha. However, the variations were observed in the yields under the changing climatic conditions of the years. In the study, the seed oil ratios of the genotypes varied between 33.8% and 38.4% in the first year, and between 28.8% and 38.7% in the second year, but the difference between the genotypes in the second year was statistically significant (p < 0.05). While thymoquinone was not found in the damascena seed oil samples, it was found between 0.45% and 4.57% in the cold-pressed seed oil of the sativa genotypes. Thymoquinone yields per hectare were between 1.24 and 18.41 kg/ ha. Linoleic, oleic, and palmitic acids are the major fatty acids, and their values were found close to each other in the all genotypes. As a result of the study, the genotypes with high thymoquinone content were classified as medicine and folk medicine, and the genotypes with low thymoquinone content were classified as spice and food. It was also concluded that the sectoral classification, called bitter black cumin or sweet black cumin, is related to the thymoquinone contents in the cold-pressed seed oil.
