Comparing Innovation Capability of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: Examining the Effects of Organizational Culture and Empowerment
(Wiley, 2010) Çakar, Nigar Demircan; Ertürk, Alper
This study analyzes the impact of organizational culture and empowerment on innovation capability, and examines the peculiarities of these effects. The study's hypotheses are tested by applying both individual and firm-level analyses to survey data collected from 743 employees from 93 small and medium-sized firms located in Turkey. For medium-sized enterprises on both the individual and firm level of analysis, results suggest that collectivism and uncertainty avoidance are positively associated with empowerment, whereas power distance is negatively related to empowerment. Assertiveness focus has no relations with empowerment and innovation capability, yet among cultural dimensions, only uncertainty avoidance is related to innovation capability. For small-sized enterprises, findings suggest that both power distance and uncertainty avoidance are linked to both empowerment and innovation capability on the individual level, whereas two new paths between collectivism and innovation capability and between assertiveness focus and empowerment are found on the firm level. Also, empowerment is found to be positively related to innovation capability for both small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on both the individual and firm level. In terms of managerial practice, our study helps clarify the key role played by cultural dimensions in the process of shaping an empowering and innovative work environment. Findings also reveal that managers should focus on participative managerial practices (e.g., empowerment) to promote innovation capability of SMEs.

Current status, distribution, and conservation of brown bear (Ursidae) and wild canids (gray wolf, golden jackal, and red fox; Canidae) in Turkey
(Tubitak Scientific & Technical Research Council Turkey, 2016) Ambarlı, Hüseyin; Ertürk, Alper; Soyumert, Anıl
Turkey has viable populations of many carnivore species of the Western Palearctic. Among those, ursids and canids are represented by brown bear (Ursus arctos) and 3 canid species, gray wolf (Canis lupus), golden jackal (Canis aureus), and red fox (Vulpes vulpes), respectively. Those species occur in major ecosystems of Turkey and experience a wide range of threats, and they are at the center of human-wildlife conflicts. However, due to a limited number of studies about their ecology and taxonomy, their current distributions, population sizes, and statuses are vague. In this study, we document the 4 species' known data in terms of distribution range, population biology, phylogeography, threats and conflicts with people, and National Red List status in Turkey by reviewing the recent literature and national news about carnivores, data collection in field surveys, and interviews with local people, personnel of the Ministry of Forestry, and hunters in more than 50 provinces. Additionally, we also provide information about rabies cases in consideration with carnivore conservation. We finally recommend further studies to fill information gaps for wildlife conservation and management based on scientific evidence.

Employees' need for independence, organizational commitment, and turnover intentions: The moderating role of justice perceptions about performance appraisals
(Ardabil Industrial Management Inst, 2016) Birecikli, Burcu; Alpkan, Lütfihak; Ertürk, Alper; Aksoy, Seval
This empirical research attempts to find out whether it is possible to retain employees who possess strong need for independence and to make them committed by using fair performance appraisal systems. One hundred five white-collar employees working in three high-tech companies were participated in this study. Results showed that both perceived procedural justice and perceived distributive justice of the performance appraisals moderated the relationship between need for independence and affective commitment, as well as the relationship between need for independence and turnover intentions. As a result, the high levels of justice perceptions will lessen the strength of negative relationship between need for independence and organizational commitment and the high levels of justice perceptions will lessen the strength of positive relationship between need for independence and turnover intentions. These findings underlined the importance of justice perceptions, since they not only lead to positive attitudes and behaviors, but also mitigate the effects of the individual attitudes such as need for independence.

Exploring predictors of organizational identification: Moderating role of trust on the associations between empowerment, organizational support, and identification
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2010) Ertürk, Alper
The purpose of this study is to explore the associations among psychological empowerment, perceived organizational support (POS), trust in supervisor, and organizational identification. In particular, this study posits that trust in supervisor moderates the relationships between psychological empowerment, POS, and organizational identification. Blue collar employees from the shipping industry in Turkey are selected as the main target of this study. A total of 518 questionnaires were analysed. Results indicate that all the dimensions of psychological empowerment, namely goal internalization, perceived competence, and perceived control, POS, cognition- and affect-based trust in supervisor are positively associated with organizational identification. Moderation analysis shows that cognition-based trust in supervisor moderates the relationships between perceived competence, perceived control, and organizational identification, whereas affect-based trust in supervisor moderates the relationships between goal internalization, POS, and organizational identification. Furthermore, some practical implications are also discussed.

Self-other agreement on transformational leadership and subordinates' assessment of supervisor's performance: Mediating role of leader-member exchange
(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2018) Ertürk, Alper; Van den Broeck, Herman; Verbrigghe, Jasmijn
Purpose Given the importance of the extent to which supervisors and their subordinates agree in their assessment of supervisors' leadership, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the possible relationship between self-other agreement on supervisors' transformational leadership and subordinates' perceptions of supervisors' in-role and extra-role performance, through the mediating role of leader-member exchange. Design/methodology/approach Self-other agreement was conceptualized as the degree of congruence between supervisors' self-assessment and subordinates' assessment of supervisors' transformational leadership. Data were collected from 36 supervisors and 189 of their subordinates. Cross-level polynomial regressions and surface response analysis were used to analyze the hypothesized relationships. Findings Statistical analyses revealed that self-other agreement on idealized influence and individual support are positively associated with subordinates' perception of leader-member exchange, and in turn leader member fully mediates the relationship between self-other agreement and subordinates' perceptions regarding their supervisors' performance. Results from polynomial analyses indicate that subordinates' ratings of leader-member exchange would be highest for underestimator, second for in-agreement/good supervisors, third for in-agreement/poor and lowest for overestimator supervisors both for the idealized influence and individual support. Originality/value This is one of the pioneer studies investigating the potential relationship between self-other agreement on supervisors' transformational leadership and the subordinates' perceptions on their supervisors' performance through social exchange. Since researchers have paid scant attention to intervening mechanisms, this study aims to extend previous research in the literature by investigating those associations through the mediating effect of leader-member exchange.
