Öğe Comparing Innovation Capability of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: Examining the Effects of Organizational Culture and Empowerment(Wiley, 2010) Çakar, Nigar Demircan; Ertürk, AlperThis study analyzes the impact of organizational culture and empowerment on innovation capability, and examines the peculiarities of these effects. The study's hypotheses are tested by applying both individual and firm-level analyses to survey data collected from 743 employees from 93 small and medium-sized firms located in Turkey. For medium-sized enterprises on both the individual and firm level of analysis, results suggest that collectivism and uncertainty avoidance are positively associated with empowerment, whereas power distance is negatively related to empowerment. Assertiveness focus has no relations with empowerment and innovation capability, yet among cultural dimensions, only uncertainty avoidance is related to innovation capability. For small-sized enterprises, findings suggest that both power distance and uncertainty avoidance are linked to both empowerment and innovation capability on the individual level, whereas two new paths between collectivism and innovation capability and between assertiveness focus and empowerment are found on the firm level. Also, empowerment is found to be positively related to innovation capability for both small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on both the individual and firm level. In terms of managerial practice, our study helps clarify the key role played by cultural dimensions in the process of shaping an empowering and innovative work environment. Findings also reveal that managers should focus on participative managerial practices (e.g., empowerment) to promote innovation capability of SMEs.Öğe Exploring reverse supply chain management practices in Turkey(Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2010) Erol, İsmail; Velioğlu, Meltem Nurtanış; Şerifoğlu, Funda Sivrikaya; Büyüközkan, Gülçin; Aras, Necati; Çakar, Nigar Demircan; Korugan, AybekPurpose This paper aims to examine the current state of reverse supply chain management (RSCM) initiatives in several Turkish industries. Design/methodology/approach This study is based on an exploratory research regarding RSCM activities of Turkish automotive, white goods, electric/electronics, and furniture industries. The sample consists of all the companies included in the Top-500 Industrial Enterprises List of The Assembly of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO). Findings The research findings show that the RSCM initiatives in the considered industries are still in a very early stage. Companies' involvement in product returns is mostly due to the legislative liabilities, and system inadequacies are emphasized as the most important reason for not being able to implement an efficient RSCM. Research implications/limitations This paper investigates the reverse supply chain practices of selected industries in Turkey and aims to enable researchers to use this study as a building block in understanding these practices and related problems. The limitation of this study is to solely include the medium and large-sized companies in the industries. Practical implications Reverse supply chain operations contribute to the economic sustainability by reducing waste and saving energy and material. In this research, an empirical study in the electronics, white goods, automotive and furniture industries is conducted, and potential research opportunities are discussed to streamline reverse supply chain activities in the industries. Hence, this study can be viewed as an attempt to increase the level of awareness on reverse supply chain issues. Originality/value No field study has been conducted to analyze reverse supply chain activities of the industries in Turkey. This research is a pioneering study and will provide a benchmark for the various research activities on related topics.Öğe The Global Economic Hibernation: Macroeconomic Indicators and Health Management Policies(2021) Çakar, Nigar Demircan; Gedikli, Ayfer; Erdoğan, SeyfettinConsidering its dire effects on different sectors, the coronavirus is far more than a healthproblem. The pandemic has hit the global economy starting with the developed world and nowspreading into emerging economies. It is a fact that developing countries are moredisadvantageous in this process since not only their health conditions and health services arenot so sophisticated as their developed counterparts, but also macroeconomic conditions arenot strong enough to endure such a long-lasting socio-economic crisis. Those countries arepoorer and it is hard for them to allocate sources to the health sector. Comparing with emergingeconomies, the developed world also has been suffering from the severe effects of thepandemic. Because of long-lasting lock-down and contractions in the global economy, alldeveloped economies revealed negative economic growth rates for the proceeding years. Thepurpose of this article is not only to compare the macroeconomic effects of the coronavirusdisease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on developed and developing countries but also to assisteconomy authorities, health care leaders, and their organizations in anticipating andpreempting problems by providing alternative health management policies rather than reacting.Macroeconomic variables data that are released by the World Bank and IMF will be appliedto make the comparisons.Öğe How organizational culture and perceived organizational support could decrease turnover intention?(Bilgesel Yayincilik San & Tic Ltd, 2009) Çakar, Nigar Demircan; Yıldız, SibelHow organizational culture and perceived organizational support could decrease turnover intention? In this study, data obtained from 256 employees from textile industry were used to investigate the relationship between organizational culture and turnover intent, and the mediating role of perceived organizational support in this relationship. Exploratory factor analysis of organizational culture items reveals that organizational culture has five dimensions namely, power distance, internal uncertainty avoidance, external uncertainty avoidance, individualism-collectivism and masculinity-femininity. This study serves as an important guide for those who aim to increase employee performance and decrease turnover intent in an important sector for Turkey. Multiple regression analyses suggest that power distance, internal uncertainty avoidance, external uncertainty avoidance and individualism-collectivism have significant effects on perceived organizational support. Turnover intent is related solely to internal uncertainty avoidance. Perceived organizational support acts as the partial mediator in the relationship between internal uncertainty avoidance and turnover intent.Öğe Oceans and notions apart? An analysis of the US and European human resource development literature(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2008) Wasti, S. Arzu; Poell, Rob F.; Çakar, Nigar DemircanA systematic content analysis of the human resource development (HRD) research articles published between 1990 and 2003 revealed notable differences in the underlying orientations and methodological approaches across the US and Europe. The US literature, in comparison to Europe, was observed to be more practice-oriented as reflected in a prescriptive and less critical approach to the study of human resource development (HRD). In terms of science orientation, the US literature was characterized to be more nomothetic and universalistic. While a subtle tendency towards becoming more prescriptive emerged in the US, over time the European literature had become less practice-oriented and more empiricist, although the latter trend did not reflect itself in the quantity but quality of quantitative research.Öğe Örgütsel Adaletin İş Tatmini Üzerindeki Etkisi: “Algılanan Örgütsel Destek” Bir Ara Değişken Mi?(2009) Çakar, Nigar Demircan; Yıldız, SibelBankacılık ve sigortacılık sektöründe faaliyet gösteren on iki firmadan 356 çalışan üzerinde gerçekleştirilen bu araştırma ile, adalet algıları, algılanan örgütsel destek ve iş tatmini arasındaki ilişkiler araştırılmaktadır. Diğer taraftan araştırmanın ara değişken analizine yönelik bulguları, adalet algılarının algılan iş tatminin üç boyutu ile ilişkisinde algılanan örgütsel desteğin tam ve kısmi ara değişken etkisine sahip olduğunu göstermiştir.Öğe Personal Values and Intended Self-Presentation during Job Interviews: A Cross-Cultural Comparison(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, Inc, 2011) Bye, Hege Hoivik; Sandal, Gro Mjeldheim; van de Vijver, Fons J. R.; Sam, David Lackland; Çakar, Nigar Demircan; Franke, Gabriele HelgaThis study examined the impact of personal values on intended self-presentation during job interviews among German, Ghanaian, Norwegian, and Turkish students (total N = 1,474). We also sought to explain cultural differences in self-presentation among these groups. The Cultural Impression Management Scale for applicants (CIM-A) and the Portrait Values Questionnaire were administered. A multigroup MIMIC model with invariant measurement and structural weights was supported, in which achievement, security, and benevolence values predicted a latent impression management factor. Intended impression management scores were significantly higher in the Ghanaian and Turkish samples than in the Norwegian and German samples. Values (achievement and security) accounted for 19.6 per cent of the cross-cultural differences in self-presentation. Adding acquiescence as an additional predictor (interpreted here as a measure of communication style) decreased the cross-cultural differences by 52.8 per cent. It is concluded that values are similarly related to intended self-presentation across these four groups, even though the cross-cultural differences in mean scores in both sets of variables were considerable.Öğe Türkiye ahşap kurutma endüstrisinin mevcut durumu, temel sorunları ve gelecek yönelimleri(2010) Korkut, Süleyman; Çakar, Nigar Demircan; Bekar, İlterTürkiye’de son yıllarda ihracatın ve kalite beklentilerinin gelişmesiyle ahşap kurutma endüstrisine yönelik yatırımlar fırın üretimi ve kullanımı bazında artmıştır.
