The study was conducted to determine heavy metal pollution in the Düzce watershed and to investigate the phytoremediation potential of dominant macrophytes in wetlands. Thirteen sampling areas were identified, five of which were located around Lake Efteni, and the rest were located along rivers. A total of 41 plant samples representing 19 plant species from 15 families were analyzed during the water, sediment, and vegetation periods. Dominant plant communities were classified using the Braun-Blanquet method. The concentrations of seven heavy metals (copper, cadmium, chromium, iron, nickel, lead, and zinc) detected in all samples included in the study were determined and compared using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results revealed that metal accumulation in wetland plants varied between species and plant parts. While cadmium concentrations in water samples exceeded the existing surface water quality standards in this area, the concentrations of other heavy metals remained below legal limits; this situation indicates that the actual pollution load accumulated in bottom sediments is significant. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) and translocation factor (TF) values of some plant species indicate that these species can be used as biomonitors for heavy metal pollution and have significant potential for the remediation of contaminated areas. Most of the plants used in the study are suitable for remediation. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF) and translocation factor (TF) values of certain plant species indicate that these species can be used as biomonitors for heavy metal contamination and have significant potential for the remediation of contaminated areas. Most of the plants used in the study are suitable for remediation. Therefore, they are recommended for monitoring heavy metal contamination in Düzce water sources. This study aims to establish a scientific basis for the protection and restoration of aquatic ecosystems for these plants, which are commonly found in similar habitats in Türkiye and its surroundings.
