The 16th century was a century in which the rivalry between the Ottomans and Spain in the Mediterranean reached its peak. This struggle, which took place during the most mature periods of both empires, changed the balances in the Mediterranean and became a place where both elements claimed to be superpowers due to its geopolitical importance. Undoubtedly, the most important factor in this lies in their desire to have a say in Mediterranean trade. Indeed, due to its geopolitical position, the Mediterranean has been a place that has been the dream of many states since ancient times. In this rivalry between the two states, sometimes the Ottomans were victorious, and sometimes the Spaniards were victorious, especially with the support of the crusader alliance from the Pope.
