This study examined special education teachers' (SETs) knowledge levels, frequency of use, and perceptions and views regarding Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) strategies. The research was conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year with special education teachers working in Ankara, Düzce, Gaziantep, Istanbul, Izmir, and Van provinces. A mixed-methods research design was employed. The quantitative phase included 307 SETs, while the qualitative phase involved semi-structured interviews with 20 teachers randomly selected from the quantitative sample. In the quantitative phase, data on teachers' knowledge levels, frequency of use, and perceptions of the social validity of NDBI strategies were collected using a questionnaire. In the qualitative phase, teachers' views and experiences related to NDBI strategies were explored through semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis H test, and Spearman's rho correlation analysis. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The quantitative findings indicated that SETs generally demonstrated high levels of knowledge, frequent use, and positive perceptions of social validity regarding NDBI strategies. Female teachers were found to have significantly higher levels of NDBI knowledge and frequency of use compared to male teachers. Teachers working at the middle school level and in Guidance and Research Centers (GRCs) demonstrated higher knowledge levels than those working in special education vocational high schools. In terms of frequency of use, teachers working with students with mild autism spectrum disorder (ASD) reported more frequent use of NDBI strategies than those working with students with mild intellectual disabilities. No significant relationship was found between social validity perceptions and demographic variables. However, moderate positive correlations were identified among knowledge level, frequency of use, and social validity. Qualitative findings revealed that NDBI strategies were perceived positively due to their child-centered structure, provision of natural learning opportunities, and support for communication skills. Nevertheless, teachers also reported several implementation challenges, including limited time, large class sizes, insufficient institutional and family support, and difficulties in planning instruction suitable for students with varying ability levels.
