Özet
Hemşirelik insan gereksinimlerinden doğmuş ve başlangıcı, insanın varoluşuna kadar uzanan bir meslektir. Oldukça zengin bir geçmişe sahip olan hemşirelik mesleğinin köklerini binlerce yıl öncesine götürmek mümkündür. Her ne kadar tarih sadece büyük adamlar tarihi olmasa da, alanlarında öncü kişilerin hayatları, meslek adına yaşadıkları sıkıntılar, mesleklerinin ilerlemesine sundukları katkıların gün yüzüne çıkarılması, gelecek nesillerin bundan faydalanması, mesleklerin ilerlemesi adına büyük katkılar sunacaktır. Bir mesleğin bugünkü durumunu anlamak ve yorumlamak için geçmişe, hatta ilk çağlara kadar gitmek, tarihsel gelişimine göz atmak; mesleğin nasıl ortaya çıktığını, tarihsel süreçte nasıl geliştiğini ve günümüze gelene kadar geçirdiği dönemleri bilmek gerekir. Türk tıp tarihi ve hemşirelik tarihi adına önemli bir öncü olan, Besim Ömer Paşa tarafından açılan hemşirelik kurslarına katılan ilk gönüllülerden, Balkan Savaşları’nda gönüllü hemşire olarak çalışan, yurt içi ve yurtdışında hemşirelik adına önemli çalışmalarda yer alan, hayatını hemşirelik eğitimine adayan, kadınların sosyal hayata dahil olmalarında etkin rol oynayan, modern bir Cumhuriyet kadını olan Safiye Hüseyin Elbi adının son yıllara kadar toplum, hatta hemşireler tarafından bile bilinmiyor olması ve Safiye Hüseyin Elbi hakkında yapılmış çalışmaların azlığı dikkat çekicidir. Türkiye’de modern hemşireliğin öncüsü olarak kabul edilen Safiye Hüseyin Elbi’nin hemşirelik alanına katkılarının topluma yeterli düzeyde ulaştırılamadığı görülmüştür. Elbi hakkında yapılan çalışmalarda da bilimsel kimliği ve yaptığı çalışmaları yerine, ağırlıklı olarak hayatı ve anıları ele alınmıştır. Yaptığımız bu çalışmada Türk hemşirelik tarihinin önemli ismi Safiye Hüseyin Elbi daha görünür kılınmaya çalışılmış; elde olan kısıtlı bilgilerle, hemşirelik adına değerli katkıları olan Elbi’nin tanınırlığının artırılması amaçlanmıştır
Nursing is a profession existing as an answer to the human needs and dating back to the human existence. It is possible to track down the history of nursing to the earliest ages of human history. Although the history is not just a composition of pioneers’ stories, revealing the life stories of pioneers, especially focusing on impediments they had during their professional lives, their contributions to the development of their fields provides remarkable assistance to the future generations for making progress in their career. To understand and evaluate a profession’s present state, it is necessary to trace it back in time till its emergence and follow-up its development until the day. Safiye Hüseyin Elbi, a modern woman in contemporary Turkey, has an important role in inclusion of woman in social life in Turkey. She was one of the first volunteers attending to the nursing courses given by Besim Ömer Paşa as well as being a volunteer nurse in the Balkan Wars. Moreover, she involved in work in nursing fields both nationally and internationally. Although she is a crucial pioneer in the history of medicine and nursing in Turkey because she dedicated her life to the nursing education, she has received public attention in the last few years; she was not recognized even by the nurses in Turkey and there has been only a few research about her in the literature. Although she is an important figure fort he history of Turkish medicine, her contributions to the nursing profession is not adequately shared with the general public. Her life story and a couple of intresting events from her memoirs are discussed, rather than her scientific and professional identity. The main aim of this study is to highlight the significance of Safiye Hüseyin Elbi as a nursing pioneer in Turkey; to increase her recognizability by using very limited information and to clarify the profession’s development in historical process.
