The purpose of the present study is to reveal the extent to which parental attitudes to reading and the literacy activities parents get their children to do affect their children's confidence in reading and the extent to which confidence in reading affects reading motivation. Accordingly, a path analysis was conducted with latent variables on the basis of structural equation modeling. The study was based on the data on Azerbaijan from PIRLS 2011. The analysis concluded that the literacy activities parents get their children to do have a slight influence on their children's confidence in reading. Similarly, parental attitudes to reading have a slight impact on children's confidence in reading. On the other hand, confidence in reading has an intermediate effect on reading motivation. Even so, reading motivation is not directly correlated with either parental attitudes to reading or the activities parents get their children to do. These two factors have only an indirect influence on reading motivation through children's confidence in reading. © 2013 Journal of Language and Literature.en_US
