Özet
Satureja is a large genus in Lamiaceae that is represented by 200 species. The name “satureia” means “herb of satyrs” and came from Latin. The majority of Satureja species are utilized in traditional medical practices around the globe to treat patients with a range of illnesses and complications. Numerous species have been pharmacologically assessed in relation to the existence of several classes of metabolites in Satureja and their variety of ethnopharmacological and ethnomedical applications. Besides utilization in aromatization as a spice, the aerial parts of the plant are traditionally used as analgesic (for muscle pain), tonic, and carminative. Studies have demonstrated that the plant has valuable biological effects including hepatoprotective, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities. Both volatile oil and herbal extract include various phytochemical components containing monoterpenes, mainly carvacrol and thymol, phenolics, and flavonoids. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Ufuk Koca-Caliskan; individual chapters, the contributors.
