Plant species diversity in urban areas is not merely an indicator of biological richness but also a fundamental determinant of ecosystem functioning, habitat integrity, and sustainable urban landscape planning. However, rapid urbanization, transformations in land use, and increasing environmental pressures have rendered the spatial distribution of floristic patterns progressively more complex. In this context, the comprehensive evaluation of environmental and spatial drivers shaping plant diversity in urban landscapes through integrative and multivariate approaches has emerged as a priority research focus within contemporary urban ecology. This doctoral thesis aims to analyze the relationships between plant species diversity (Shannon H′), species richness, and species evenness patterns along an urban–rural gradient in the city of Düzce, Türkiye, in relation to environmental, edaphic, topographic, and climatic variables. To this end, detailed floristic surveys conducted across 397 subsampling plots resulted in the documentation of 756 vascular plant taxa. The environmental dataset represents a multidimensional framework encompassing soil properties, microclimatic measurements, macroclimatic and BIO variables, topographic indicators, and land-cover components. During the analytical process, nonlinear relationships between plant diversity metrics and environmental gradients were examined using machine learning–based models. The modeling results revealed that the relationships between Shannon diversity and environmental variables exhibit pronounced nonlinear patterns, with Random Forest models achieving high levels of explanatory power and generalizability. Transect-based spatial analyses further demonstrated that plant diversity patterns undergo a clear structural transition from the urban core toward semi-natural and natural areas. In particular, species richness was relatively high but unevenly distributed in urban core zones, whereas rural and forest-edge zones supported more balanced and ecologically coherent floristic assemblages. Based on these integrative findings, a floristically grounded planning and decision-support framework was developed to evaluate the ecological quality of urban landscapes. The results provide a scientific basis for guiding planting and landscape management decisions of local authorities according to spatial ecological characteristics.
