As a result of the global attention for sustainable development, service innovation has emerged as a strategy to cope with environmental challenges while minimizing the cost of capital for the firm and building investor and customer confidence. Service innovation has implications both in manufacturing and service companies. This empirical paper provides an inductive review on “Smart product service systems” in fashion industry by explaining how digital servitization as a form of service innovation is critical for sustainability, and the promise of digital technologies for smart fashion industry based on analysing current challenges, opportunities and digital technologies for the implementation of Smart PSS in the fashion industry. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
