Özet

This study aims to examine the conception of the soul held by Sehbenderzade Filibeli Ahmed Hilmi within the context of the eclectic and critical relationship established by the Islamic intellectual tradition with Western philosophy. The primary objective of the research is to analyze how the author positions the soul not only as a principle of individual existence but also as a metaphysical substance and a moral agent, and to highlight the philosophical alternative this conception offers against the materialist currents of the period. Furthermore, the study centers on how Filibeli's unique approach constitutes a philosophical stance against the dominant materialist and positivist currents of the era. The methodology adopted in the study includes conceptual analysis based on primary sources, historical-comparative analysis, and the technique of analyzing philosophical texts. Filibeli grounds the soul within a holistic metaphysical framework that reconciles the relationships between matter and spirit, reason and intuition, and unity and multiplicity. Accordingly, the study analyzes the soul's connection to the divine order, its relationship with the body, and the problem of immortality through the author's Platonic, Spinozist, and Ghazalian references. The findings reveal that Filibeli does not view the soul as a function derived from the body's complex operations; rather, he conceives it as an independent cevher-i basit (simple substance) that governs the body like an instrument. The author has re-established the issue of the soul's immortality and perpetuity not only through traditional assumptions but also through rational and intuitive foundations. As a result of the analysis, it has been determined that Filibeli's approach makes a significant contribution to rethinking the transcendence of the soul. Within this framework, the study addresses the debates regarding the nature of the soul as a philosophical problem that reexamines the metaphysical foundations of modern consciousness within a historical context. Consequently, Filibeli's understanding of the soul presents a unique perspective that establishes a metaphysical continuity within Ottoman thought and re-grounds human existential consciousness by offering an intellectual synthesis between modernity and tradition.
