Hypoxemic respiratory failure is a one of the major complications after surgery, especially following cardiothoracic and neurosurgery. Preoperative and postoperative physiotherapy should be performed in selected patients undergoing these operations. NIV confirms its feasibility and effectiveness in respiratory failure following lung resection. A trained team, careful patient selection and optimal choice of devices, can optimise outcome of NIV. Further research on NIV in cardiothoracic and neurosurgical conditions can be conducted to extend the use of NIV. © 2021 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.en_US
