Özet
Background: Nurses are patient care professionals who are expected to follow moral and legal rules, think critically, use problem-solving and effective decision-making skills, and have high ethical sensitivities throughout their practice. Especially recently, media reports have shown how important it is for health care workers to have strong ethical values and to raise awareness about this issue. Professional history is important in terms of the formation of professional culture and professional awareness along with professional ethics. Nurses need to know their profession history in order to learn the lessons from their past and be able to take firm steps into the future. Methodology: In this study, ethical issues experienced by nurses in Turkey, developments related to the history and ethics of nursing has been compared with other European countries, and developments in the field of nursing history and ethics in Turkey, and has served the professional ethics based on the importance of professional backgrounds. Results: There have been significant developments regarding the history and ethics of nursing in recent years in Turkey. The establishment of the Department of Nursing History and Ethics would especially quicken the studies in this field and contribute to the training of nurses for high ethical sensitivity and awareness. This is an important development for the nursing history and ethics. Conclusion: The importance of a professional history is undeniable in terms of the formation of a professional culture and professional consciousness as well as professional ethics. It is necessary to include ethics and history issues more comprehensively in nursing curricula. It is thought that the history of nursing and ethics department will contribute to increase the quality of education and studies in the field. © 2021 Elsevier Masson SAS
