Memory is defined as the ability of humans to store and recall the outcomes of interactions with their environment in the brain. In social life, humans continuously find themselves in different spaces, engaging in various interactions within these spaces. In this context, memory is influenced by the space and the actions that occur within it. The phenomenon of recollection takes place through spaces, and public spaces, where social life occurs, carry traces of society's shared values and memory. Thus, public spaces enable the formation and maintenance of a collective, shared memory. In this context, the concepts of collective memory and spatial memory fall within the interest areas of both architecture and preservation disciplines. This thesis aims to address the re-using public spaces with their memory value through participatory approaches. For this purpose, the topics of memory, space, and continuity in public spaces are discussed, and the connection between the preservation and continuity of memory in public spaces and the preservation of urban cultural assets is examined. In the first stage of the study, a conceptual framework was established through a literature review related to the topic. Then, to test the research questions in practice, a case study area was selected, and a detailed field study was conducted in this area. In this stage, the example of Yukarı Mahalle Historical Women's Market, located within the urban conservation area in Akçakoca district of Düzce province, was examined, and the effects of the Yukarı Mahalle Traditional Market, which operates in the same area today, on collective memory and public space, as well as its contribution to urban preservation, were explored. During the field study phase, survey, in-depth interviews, document analysis in public institutions, and on-site observation methods were applied. When the findings related to the sample area were examined, it was observed that with the activation of the Yukarı Mahalle Traditional Market, positive socio-cultural and economic developments occurred in the neighborhood, the efforts aimed at preserving cultural heritage accelerated, and the municipality's interest in preservation works increased. Consequently, the contribution of revitalizing the use of a public space ingrained in social memory for the purpose of supporting local development to the preservation of architectural heritage was demonstrated.
