Sayısal analizler sonucunda, çirozların her etriyede uygulandığı referans modele kıyasla, atlamalı çiroz düzenine sahip kolonlarda etkin enine donatı katkısında yaklaşık %25 oranında azalma meydana geldiği belirlenmiştir.
Earthquakes that occur in our country unfortunately cause significant loss of life and economic damage. In the face of this unfavorable situation, the key factor that enables us to learn how to live with earthquakes is the correct implementation of structures during construction. Since reinforced concrete structures constitute a large proportion of the building stock, the importance given to these structures becomes even more critical. In reinforced concrete buildings, the seismic performance of columns is directly related to the arrangement of transverse reinforcement and the continuity of cross ties. Unfortunately, it has been observed that the cross-tie details specified in design projects are not applied as intended in practice, and that the so-called "alternating cross-tie" application, commonly referred to as "one full–one empty," is widely preferred in the field. This study was carried out to identify the cross-tie practices encountered in field applications and to evaluate the effects of these practices on the expected seismic performance of columns under earthquake loads. In the first stage of the study, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 40 different craftsmen and workers in order to determine field application tendencies. The survey results indicated that the double-stirrup application is considered more practical in terms of workmanship, whereas the full cross-tie application is evaluated as time-consuming and economically costly. In addition, it was determined that alternating cross-tie applications are often accepted during construction inspection processes. Based on the field data obtained, a numerical analysis framework was established in the second stage of the study. In the numerical analyses, representative single-story floor plans consisting of four columns with 4 m column spacing were modeled. Square columns with 40×40 cm sections and rectangular columns with 30×60 cm sections were selected. For each section type, four different transverse reinforcement configurations—no cross ties, alternating cross ties, full cross ties, and double stirrups—were modeled, resulting in a total of eight different numerical models. In all models, concrete and steel grades, longitudinal reinforcement diameters and quantities, and stirrup spacing were kept constant, and only the cross-tie configuration was varied. The analyses were performed using the ideCAD software and evaluated based on moment–curvature relationships and ductility indicators. The numerical analysis results showed that, compared to the reference model in which cross ties were provided at every stirrup, columns with alternating cross-tie arrangements exhibited an approximately 25% reduction in the effective contribution of transverse reinforcement. This reduction led to significant decreases in ultimate curvature and ductility capacity rather than in load-carrying capacity. This finding indicates that columns with alternating cross-tie arrangements may exhibit more brittle behavior under seismic effects. Consequently, although the alternating cross-tie application is considered practical in field conditions, it was concluded that it represents a critical construction deficiency that adversely affects the seismic performance of columns.
