Purpose: In this study we aimed to determine whether the family type is effective on family functions and psychiatric symptoms or not, among the women in the role of bride who are in conventional broad families and the married women who are the members of nuclear families. Method: The target population of this study was the brides in the region of 5 local clinics in the center of Düzce city. It is planned to reach 67 broad families in the region of these 5 local clinics. All of theses families are included to the study. The women in 100 nuclear families - from the records of local clinics - are appointed as the control group by using simple random sampling method. These families are visited in their houses by two psychiatry nurses. Sociodemographic inquiry form, Family Assessment Device (FAD), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale (RIELCS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) are evaluated by face to face interview. Findings: There was no significant statistical difference between two groups of women according to age, occupational condition, life duration of families, type, duration and count of marriage and the count of children. Duration of education was statistically higher among women who are the members of nuclear families (t=-3.596, p<0.001). BSI subscales, RIELCS, Beck Depression and Beck Anxiety scores were not statistically different between two groups. Of the subscales of FAD, communication, roles, emotional reaction and behavioral control subscale scores were significantly lower in the nuclear family women group which meant that these properties of family function was better for nuclear family women than the broad family women. There was no significant difference between two groups according to other subscales of FAD. Discussion and Conclusion: According to our findings we may say that family type does not play an important role in the occurrence of psychopathology. The results from FAD pointed that there was a deficiency about adequate connection in both family types while the scores in communication, roles, emotional reaction and behavioral control subscales was better for the women in nuclear families than the women in broad families. However we may conclude that these differences do not considerably affect the occurrence of psychopathology. The most important restriction of our study was the difficulty in connecting with the women in some broad families because of the reluctant demeanor of mother-in-laws and father-in-laws of these families. We could not be able to interview with targeted 15 brides because of this obstacle. These women are supposed to have worse congruity and more psychiatric problems. We suggest that the assessment of these women will provide useful information for the psychiatric care planning.en_US
