Öğe Anger Management and Factors that Influence Anger in Physicians(Galenos Yayincilik, 2011) Koçer, Emel; Koçer, Abdulkadir; Canan, FatihObjective: There are limited data regarding anger and its management with respect to physicians and many other professionals. Our objective was to evaluate anger expression and control in physicians. Material and Methods: The physicians of the Duzce School of Medicine were the participants in the study. Physicians were assigned to either an internal medicine or a surgery study group. Each group contained physicians from several specialties. The Spielberger State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, and the Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventories were administered to all participants. The physicians (n=158) were evaluated and compared with controls (n=105) in terms of anger control and sociodemographic variables. Results: Anger-control scores were higher in physicians (p<0.01) and in those who willingly chose the medical profession (p<0.05). Age, number of years as a physician, and the specialty were negatively correlated with anger management in physicians working in the surgical disciplines (p<0.01). Only Beck anxiety and depression scores were positively correlated with anger-trait scores and anger-in scores for physicians working in the internal medicine disciplines (p<0.01). Conclusion: Physicians were relatively successful in coping with anger. A willingness to choose the medical profession was a factor influencing anger control. The association between Internet addiction and dissociation among Turkish college students(W B Saunders Co-Elsevier Inc, 2012) Canan, Fatih; Ataoğlu, Ahmet; Özçetin, Adnan; İçmeli, CelalettinPurpose: This study aimed to investigate Internet use patterns and Internet addiction among young adult university students and to examine the correlation between excessive Internet use and dissociative symptoms. Methods: The study was conducted among 1034 students, aged between 18 and 27 years. Materials and Methods: Eighty-two type 2 diabetic patients were enrolled. The participants were assessed for eating disorders by a psychiatrist. Blood samples were drawn and HbA1c and other biochemical parameters were measured. Results: Of the 82 subjects, 27 (34.1%) met the criteria for BED. No other types of eating disorders were detected. HbA1c was significantly higher in individuals with BED (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our findings reveal that BED is highly prevalent among type 2 diabetic patients and it impairs glycemic control. Thus, patients with type 2 diabetes should be assessed carefully for eating disorders.Öğe Association of mean Platelet volume with DSM-IV major depression in a large community-based population: The MELEN study(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2012) Canan, Fatih; Dikici, Süber; Kutlucan, Ali; Celbek, Gökhan; Coşkun, Hülya; Güngör, Adem; Kocaman, GülşenThe relationship between major depression and increased platelet activity has been previously stated by several studies. This study sought to test the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) - an indicator of platelet activity - and major depression, in an adult Turkish population sample. Respondents were 2286 participants interviewed in a regional survey. The diagnosis of current (one month) major depression was made according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. MPV was measured along with total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, BMI, and waist circumference. Two hundred eighty-nine participants (12.5%) were diagnosed as having major depression. Patients with major depression were found to have increased MPV levels in comparison with participants without depression (p = 0.001). After excluding the subjects with risk factors capable of influencing platelet activity. MPV was still found to be elevated in patients with major depression compared with non-depressed individuals (p < 0.01). Linear regression analysis revealed a significant independent association of major depression with MPV levels (r = 0.123: p = 0.001). According to the findings of this study, increased MPV (or platelet activation) is associated with current (one month) diagnosis of major depression. Future research should investigate the effect of depression treatment on MPV. Bu sonuca göre, kadınlara her alanda erkeklerle eşit eğitim ve iş olanaklarının tanınması, iş ve aile yaşamında destek sağlanması önerilmiştir.Öğe Childhood trauma and dissociation in women with pseudoseizure-type conversion disorder(Taylor & Francis As, 2009) Özçetin, Adnan; Belli, Hasan; Ertem, Ümit; Bahçebaşı, Talat; Ataoğlu, Ahmet; Canan, FatihBackground: Conversion disorder is thought to be associated with psychological factors because of the presence of conflict and other stressors prior to the condition. Aim: The aim of this study is to compare adult patients with pseudoseizure-type conversion disorder with healthy control group in terms of childhood trauma, dissociative disorder and family history of psychiatric disorders. Method : 56 female patients were admitted to the general psychiatry hospital outpatient clinic between January and July 2005. All patients had a negative experience about their families just before having the conversion. Diagnosis was made according to the DSM-IV criteria. A control group consisting of similar patient demographics of the disease group has been selected. Socio-demographic information forms, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Dissociation Questionnaire (DIS-Q), were completed on the patients. Results: CTQ total (t = 12.12, P < 0.001) and subscales, emotional abuse and emotional neglect (EA-EN) (t = 12.74, P < 0.001), physical abuse (PA) (t = 10.05, P < 0.001), and sexual abuse (SA) (t = 7.69, P < 0.001) were significantly high in the conversion group. DIS-Q mean points were statistically higher in the conversion group (t = 11.05, P < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings suggest that pseudoseizures (conversion disorder) should be included within dissociative disorders in DSM system as in ICD. It is usually uncommon for the patient to tell about childhood trauma without being specially questioned about this issue. Thus, it would be helpful to uncover these experiences by using related scales in conversion disorder patients.Öğe Comment on "Lack of Correlation Between Depression and Coronary Artery Calcification in a Non-Selected Danish Population." Methods: Fourteen patients with schizophrenia and 31 healthy controls, between 22 and 44 years of age, were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Bone mineral density (BMD) levels of each group were measured by Dual Energy X-ray Absorbiometry (DEXA). The patients were assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS). All patients had been receiving antipsychotic treatment for at least 2 years. Patients' sociodemographic caharacteristics and risk factors for osteoporosis (antipsychotic use, sunlight exposure, physical activity, etc.) were documented. Results: As compared with the healthy controls, the patients with schizophrenia had significantly lower BMD at the lumbar spine and at all sites of the proximal femur. Correlation analysis showed that the only factor related with the femoral BMD only in patients with schizophrenia was the age. No association between BMD and gender, PANSS score, type of antipsychotic medications, and other risk factors for osteoporosis were observed. Conclusions: In this study, we found that BMD in schizophrenia patients was lower than that of healthy controls and this finding suggest that osteoporotic changes may be seen in younger ages. Further prospective studies are needed to better clarify the relationship between osteoporosis and schizophrenia.Öğe Comparison of bone mineral density levels in young-adult patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls(2011) Koçer, Emel; Yazıcı, Selma; Canan, FatihAmaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, genç-erişkin şizofreni hastalarında kemik mineral yoğunluğunun değerlendirilmesi ve sağlıklı kontrollerle karşılaştırılmasıdır. Şizofreni ve osteoporoz arasındaki ilişkiyi daha iyi açığa çıkaracak prospektif çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.Öğe Comparison of Child Bringing-Up Attitudes of Families Having Mentally Retarded Children and Families Who Have Healthy Children(Düzce Üniversitesi, 2008) İçmeli, Celalettin; Ataoğlu, Ahmet; Canan, Fatih; Özçetin, AdnanPurpose: A healthy family, which is decribed as “functional family”, provides a healthy psycho-social environment for the child development. Presence of a chronically ill or a mentally retarded member may distort family functioning. In our study we hypothesed that the family functioning of parents having a retarded child would be impaired. We compared the parents who has a retarded child and parents who has healthy children according to their family functioning. Methods: The participants were the parents of 50 mentally retarded children (being educated in special subclasses of primary schools and in private rehabilitation centers) and 30 healthy children (being educated in normal classes of primary schools). The parents were asked to complete a socio-demographic form (prepared by the authors) and “Family Assessment Device”. The data were analysed statistically. Results: It is showed that among the parents who have a retarded child, 24 % feel guilt and remorse, 14 % lived rebellion and exhaustion, 20 % could not exhibit adequate patience and understanding. The IAS was administered to 300 high school students along with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Submissive Acts Scale (SAS). For test-retest reliability, the IAS was administered a second time 7 days after the first administration. An interitem reliability reduced the initial scale from 31 to 27 items (with Cronbach's alpha of 0.94). The factor analysis suggests the existence mainly of one factor in the IAS. Correlation analyses indicated that BDI and SAS were significantly correlated positively with the IAS. One-week test-retest correlation for the IAS was highly significant. According to these results, the psychometric properties of the IAS are promising.Öğe The influence of sports on anxiety, depression, and perceived problem solving ability(Cumhuriyet Univ Tip Fak Psikiyatri Anabilim Dali, 2010) Canan, Fatih; Ataoğlu, AhmetObjective: In this study we aimed to investigate the depression, anxiety, and perceived problem solving ability levels of sportmen who exercise regularly and to figure out if they differentiate from non-exercising population according to these variables.
