Öğe Empathy Levels of Students Studying at Two Different Faculties(Düzce Üniversitesi, 2020) Cangür, Şengül; Ateş, Aylin; Dindar, Beyza; Göksu, Buse; Çürükoğlu, Büşra; Han, Döne; Adanur, HilalAim:This study was planned as cross-sectional andcorrelational to compare the empathy levels of the students studying in SocialWork and Computer Engineering departments of Duzce University.Materialand Methods: By applying proportional stratified sampling method, aresearch sample was created by randomly selected 100 students from eachdepartment and agreed to participate in the study. Personal information form and Empathy Level Determination Scalewere used to collect the data. Results:It was found that the empathy level of the students studying in the Social Workdepartment was significantly higher than the empathy level of thestudents studying in the Computer Engineering department. According to the department,socio-demographic characteristics such as parents' education levels, gender, class, family type, place of residence (except for cognitive empathy level),status of dealing with art/sports did not affect students' empathy level. Onlythe difference between the cognitive empathy subscale scores measured from themaccording to place of residence was found to be different in both departments. The cognitive empathysubscale score of the students in Social Work department living in thetown/village was significantly higher than the score of the students studyingin the Computer Engineering living in the town/village (p lt;0.001). Similarfindings were obtained for students studying in different departments thatliving in the city and metropolitan. In addition, the cognitive empathysubscale score of the students living in the town/village studying in ComputerEngineering was significantly lower than the scores of the students living inother settlements in the same department (p lt;0.05).Conclusion: It can be said that the empathy levels ofthe students are different due to the different course content and education inthe departments where they are educated. As empathy skills can be improvedthrough education, it may be suggested to offer similar trainings and / orelective courses in other numerical intensive faculties and departments as wellas in Social Work department.
