TAFS?R METHODOLOGY: Y?SUF B. HIL?L AL-SAFAD? (D. 696/1296) AND HIS WORK ‘‘KASHF AL-ASR?R WA HATK AL-AST?R’’

The Tafs?r treatise of Jam?l al-D?n, Ab?’l-Fa??’’l Y?suf b. Hil?l al-?afad? entitled: “Kashf al-Asr?r wa Hatk al-Ast?r” is one of the significant tafs?r works written during the Mamluks period particularly in the 7th century AH (that is 13th century CE). Thus, ?afed? in his above-mentioned tafs?r work used an approach that is different from the one used by other famous mufessir?n that lived in the same century and the same sultanate such as, Izzudd?n b. Abdissal?m (d. 660/1262), Mu?ammad b. A?mad al-Qur?ub? (d. 671/1273), Ibnu’l-Munayyir al-Iskandar? (d. 683/1284), Taqiyyudd?n b. Taymiyyah (d. 728/1328) and Ab? Hayy?n al-Andal?s? (d. 745/1344) among others. That shows that ?afad? is a qualified scholar of tafs?r and also indicates the crucial importance of his work in the history of the Qur’?nic exegesis. Therefore, this article critically studies the ?afad?’s unique approach to tafs?r, his place among the Mamluks’ exegetes and his method in Interpreting the Qur’?nic verses.
