Segmentation of color images based on relation matrix
(Ieee, 2007) Demirci, Recep; Katırcıoğlu, Ferzan
In this study, segmentation is done by using the similarity feature between neighbour pixells. Image segmentation was not done on the original image, it was done on the similarity image, by using region growing algoritm. Distance and similarity measure functions and relation matrix are explained on similarity image. It was tried to answer the effect of similarity measure functions and how threshold and normality value effect the segmentation.

Solution of economic dispatch problem using gravitational search algorithm
(2011) Duman, Serhat; Arsoy, Aysen Basa; Yörükeren, Nuran
An efficient and optimum economic operation of electric power generation systems has always played an important role in the operation of the electric power industry. Low fuel cost and reliable operation of power systems is desired the available electricity generation resources to supply the load demand on the power system. Economic dispatch problem is one of the nonlinear optimization problems of electrical power systems. This study presents a new heuristic approach to solve the well-known power system economic dispatch problem using Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA). In order to test the effectiveness of proposed approach it was applied to different test systems. To show that effectiveness of proposed algorithm the results obtained are compared to those reported in the literature. The simulation results demonstrate that this proposed approach is a very useful and efficient approach to solve economic dispatch problem. © 2011 Chamber of Turkish Electric.

Load frequency control of a single area power system using gravitational search algorithm
(2012) Duman, Serhat; Yörükeren, Nuran; Altaş, İsmail H.
In this paper, a novel heuristic search method called Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is proposed for determination of the optimal proportional-integral (PI) and proportional-integral-derivate (PID) parameters in load frequency control of a single area power system. A single area non reheat thermal system is considered to design the PI and PID controllers which have optimized parameters obtained using GSA. The effectiveness of the proposed PI and PID controllers are compared with those of conventional PI controller. The simulation results show that the enhanced PI and PID controllers with the proposed approach provide a better damping of oscillations compared to those of conventional PI controller in power system. © 2012 IEEE.

Investigation of the best placement for voltage stability by STATCOM
(2011) Doğan, Metin; Döşoğlu, M. Kenan; Maden, Dinçer; Tosun, Salih; Öztürk, Ali
The study is related to the identification of optimal point for Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) for static voltage stability. The study undertaken in IEEE 14 buses systems utilized analysis for relationships in voltage maximum loading parameters of STATCOM placed between lines and analysis for change in the bus voltage. Maximum loading parameter values obtained for each line and the improvements in weak buses that provided the best results were given in tables and figures. The results of the study show that STATCOM improves the voltage instability cases that can occur in optimal place selection. © 2011 Chamber of Turkish Electric.

Investigation of TCSC and SSSC controller effects on the power system
(2011) Doğan, Metin; Tosun, Salih; Öztürk, Ali; Döşoğlu, M. Kenan
Electrical power systems have been growing due to the increased demand and various loads and it is getting more and more difficult to provide stability and control. It is possible to increase line transmission capacities and to control these systems by providing reactive power compensation. In the recent years, FACTS (Flexible Alternative Current Transmission System) devices have been used as reactive power compensation elements. The study utilized rapid responding TCSC (Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor) and SSSC (Static Synchronous Series Compensator) FACTS devices that are formed by power electronics elements. The effects of these devices on voltage stability, on the powers carried on the lines and the losses that occur on the lines were investigated with the simulation and its results. © 2011 Chamber of Turkish Electric.

Investigation of the control voltage and reactive power in wind farm load bus by statcom and SVC
    (2009) Öztürk, Ali; Döşoğlu, Kenan
In this study, the voltage stability of the bus load in various static and dynamic load systems that are fed by a wind farm has been examined. In the control of load voltage and reactive power, 10 MVAr Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) is used. In the wind farm examined, Double Feed Induction Generator (DFIG) is used. In voltage and reactive power control, the results of time response and damping oscillation have been found using MATLAB / Simulink. The results achieved have proved that SVC and STATCOM yield good results when used in terms of voltage stability of the system.

Determination of the PID controller parameters for speed and position control of DC motor using gravitational search algorithm
(2011) Duman, Serhat; Maden, Dinçer; Güvenç, Uğur
In this paper we use a new search heuristic called Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) to determination of the optimal PID controller parameters in the speed and position control of a DC motor. The model of a DC motor is considered as second and third order system. Mean squared error (MSE) performance index has been used as objective function. End of the optimization process, the rise and the settling times and the overshoot are compared to those reported in the literature. To show that effectiveness of proposed method are compared with Ziegler-Nichols method in speed control of DC motor. Simulation results show the effectiveness and robustness of proposed controllers to provide the speed and position control of DC motor. © 2011 Chamber of Turkish Electric.

Application of gravitational search algorithm for optimal reactive power dispatch problem
(2011) Duman, Serhat; Sönmez, Yusuf; Güvenç, Uğur; Yörükeren, Nuran
In this paper, Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is applied to solve the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem. The ORPD problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained single-objective optimization problem where the real power loss and the bus voltage deviations are to be minimized separately. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, it has been tested on IEEE 30 bus system consisting 6 generator and compared other algorithms reported those before in literature. Results show that GSA is more efficient than others for solution of single-objective ORPD problem. © 2011 IEEE.

Anisotropic diffusion filter without conductivity parameters
(2012) Demirci, Recep; Güvenç, Uğur; Tanyeri, Ufuk
Two novel automatic anisotropic diffusion filters without conduction parameters were proposed in this paper. In the proposed first method, initially, the gradient of the noisy image to be filtered was calculated by Sobel operator and then the center of gravity of gradient image was used as diffusivity parameter, K and edge threshold. It was observed that the center of gravity of gradient image changed with noise. In the second approach, the complement of gradient image was directly employed as heat conductivity parameter in image filter. Consequently, the user dependency was avoided. The proposed image filter was tested with well-known test images. © 2012 Dunarea de Jos University.
