Optimization of the hardened concrete properties with GA and LP
(Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2007) Özgan, Ercan; Öztürk, Ali
In this study, compression strength and physical properties of the forty concrete carrot specimens taken from some buildings which collapsed by 1999 earthquakes were investigated and the correlations between compressive strength and physical properties determined. Compressive strength prediction models were established according to the physically properties of the specimens. These models tried to maximize using Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Linear Programming (LP) depending on specimens' properties, ultrasound values, Schmidt hammer's values and one-axis compressive strength. LP and GA were applied in order to maximize the carrot specimens' compressive strength and optimum properties determined. Finally, it was seen that one-axis compressive strength of the forty carrot specimens were changing between 8-15 kPa. However, maximized one-axis compressive strength were calculated 14.97 kPa with LP and 15.27 kPa with GA. © 2007 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Neural Networks based modelling of traffic accidents in interurban rural highways, Düzce sampling
(Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2008) Özgan, Ercan; Demirci, Recep
In this study, alternatively, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based modelling of traffic accidents on two line interurban rural highways in terms of number of accidents, injuries and dead have been presented. This study was conducted for D100/11 state highway section in Düzce. In this section of the highway, totally 783 traffic accidents occurred and 1396 vehicles involved in these accidents between 2002 and 2006 years. Using traffic accident reports data, ANN was applied for modelling of traffic accidents with respect to distance and months. As a result, it was observed that there was a perfect fit between the simulation results and actual data of accidents and the created neural network model of accidents resembles the actual data. Therefore, the developed model could be an alternative method for predictions of traffic accidents on interurban rural highways. © 2008 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Determining the stability of asphalt concrete at varying temperatures and exposure times using destructive and non-destructive methods
(Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2007) Özgan, Ercan
This study examined the effect of varying temperatures and varying exposure times on the stability of asphalt conrete using destructive and non-destructive methods. The study also looked at the relationship between destructive and non-dcstructive methods. In order to investigate the stability according to exposure time and environment temperature, exposure times of 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 h and temperatures of 30, 40 and 50°C were selected. The results showed that at the environment temperature of 17°C the stability of the asphalt core samples decreased by 40.16% at 30°C after 1.5 h and 62.39% after 6 h. At 40°C the decrease was 74.31% after 1.5 and 78.10% after 6 h. At 50°C the stability of the asphalt decreased by 83.22% after 1.5 h and 88.66% after 6 h. The results also pointed to a moderate negative relationship (R = -0.533) between second ultrasound and stability indicating that non-destructive ultrasound method can be used to predict stability. © 2007 Asian Network for Scientific Information.
