Psychological Status and Related Factors in Syndactyl Patients

Purpose: Syndactyl (SD) can cause secondary psychiatric problems as well as functional impairment. We aimed to determine the psychiatric problems of SD patients in comparison to a healthy control group. Methods: There were 38 SD (22 male, 16 female) patients in the study and 32 (18 male, 14 female) people in the control group. The control and study groups were age and sex matched and comprised of people living in the same region. All participants filled out Symptom Check List–90, Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory. Results: The baseline scores regarding somatic symptoms (p= 0.05), depressive symptoms (p=0. 03), interpersonal relationship sensitivity (P=0.002) and psychotic symptoms (P=0.01) were significantly higher in the SD group when compared to the control group. The SD group BDE (p=0.014) and BAE (p=0.018) scores were also higher than the control group. There was a negative correlation between male sex and anxiety, depression, obsession, interpersonal relations, anger, paranoid psychosis, additional mean baseline scores and general symptoms index. Conclusion: SD causes psychiatric problems especially in females. Psychiatric support should be given to the patients in addition to surgical treatment to improve life quality
