Öğe Being a child of a parent with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder: A qualitative study(W B Saunders Co-Elsevier Inc, 2024) Karaca, Aysel; Sener, Dilek Konuk; Kundakci, NeclaChildren of people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder encounter great difficulties in coping with the symptoms of the disorders. The study was conducted to determine the feelings, opinions, life experiences, and needs of the children of parents with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. This is a descriptive study conducted using the in-depth interview design, a qualitative method. The sample consisted of 19 children who agreed to participate in the study with parental consent. Data were collected using a personal information form and a semi-structured qualitative interview form. The data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. As a result of the thematic analysis, five main themes were obtained: Parents from children's eyes, living with parents, social pressure, coping strategies, this life with one word. The study concluded that children of parents followed up for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder struggle with many individual and social difficulties. These children have feelings of fear, embarrassment, or anger with this life experience; encounter social exclusion; and are overwhelmed with heavy responsibilities at an early age. Their coping strategies can be maladaptive, such as smoking or alcohol consumption, thinking of eloping, becoming introverted, and so on.Öğe The effect of auditory stimuli on the pain and physiological parameters of children on mechanical ventilation during aspiration procedure: A randomized controlled trial(Wiley, 2023) Demir, Kubra; Sener, Dilek KonukPurpose: The study was conducted to determine the effect of mother's voice and music sound on pain and physiological parameters during aspiration procedure in children with mechanical ventilation support in the pediatric intensive care unit.Design and Methods: This study was a randomized controlled type experimental study. According to the power analysis result of the sample of the study, 84 children who were treated in the pediatric intensive care unit of two university hospitals in Istanbul were formed. Introductory Information Form, Ramsey Sedation Scale, Physiological Parameter Form and Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability (FLACC) Pain Scale were used to collect data. Results: When the pain results of the children were evaluated, the mean FLACC Pain Scale value of the children in the control group was found to be significantly higher than children in the mother's voice and music voice group (p < 0.05). It was determined that the lowest FLACC Pain Scale value was in the mother's voice group (p < 0.05). When the physical parameter results were evaluated, it was determined that the physiological measurement values of the children in the experimental group were positively affected (p < 0.05), there was a significant difference between the control group (p < 0.05) and the most effective result was in the mother's voice group (p < 0.05).Practice Implications: Allowing children to listen mother's voice and music during aspiration procedure reduces pain of the children, positively affects their physical parameter values and enhances quality of nursing care. The results of this study create a scientific basis for nursing practices in the clinical settings and contribute to the clinical practices by shedding a light on future evidence-based studies.Öğe The effect of feeding methods of bottle and injector on the transition to full breastfeeding and sucking success in preterm newborns: A randomized controlled trial(Elsevier Science Inc, 2022) Şengün, Zehra; Sener, Dilek KonukPurpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding methods of bottle and injector on the transition to full breastfeeding and sucking success in preterm newborns. Design and methods: This study was a randomized controlled type experimental study. The study sample included 62 preterm newborns, resulting from the strength analysis, who were treated in the neonatal intensive care unit of a university hospital (31 bottle-feeding group, 31 injector feeding group). Data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, Preterm Infant Follow-up Form and LATCH Breastfeeding Diagnostic Scale. The infants in the syringe and the bottle-feeding group were fed, and the sucking successes and transition times to breastfeeding were evaluated during the first breastfeeding, after 48 h and before discharge. Results: When sucking successes and transition times to breastfeeding were evaluated, LATCH scores of the mothers in the syringe feeding group were significantly higher than the mothers in the bottle-feeding group, and infants switched to full breastfeeding in a shorter time (p < 0.05). When the physical parameter results were evaluated, the mean heart rate of the babies in the bottlefed group was significantly higher than the injector-fed group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: It has been seen that injecting feeding method has a positive effect on the success of the newborn, the time of transition to full breastfeeding and life signs according to the bottle-feeding method. The findings obtained in this study suggest that to increase the success of sucking, shortening the transition time to full breastfeeding and using the injector feding method to maintain stabile physical parameters. Application to practice: The findings obtained in this study suggest that to increase the success of sucking, shortening the transition time to full breastfeeding and using the injector feding method to maintain stabile physical parameters. The cohort in this cross-sectional and correlational study consisted of the mothers of 390 students with developmental disabilities; 77.2% of the mothers reported using at least one complementary and alternative medicine treatment. The highest level of use was found in the groups of mothers of children with cerebral palsy (100%) and autism spectrum disorder (88.5%). The most commonly used treatments were biological therapies consisting of special diets and multivitamins, manipulative and body-based methods including massage and exercise, and mind-body interventions such as prayer, wearing amulets, and seeking help from a Muslim preacher (hodja). However, mothers never used alternative medicine treatments such as homeopathy, acupuncture, or Ayurveda, nor did they use energy-based healing techniques such as reiki, tai chi, yoga, kinesiology, or neurofeedback exercises. Health care professionals, especially nurses as health care team members, should be knowledgeable and careful about the benefits, side effects, administration methods, and contraindications of complementary and alternative medicine treatments.
