Condition monitoring of rotating electrical machines
    (Elsevier, 2022) Sarma, N.; Tuohy, P.; Djurovi?, S.
This article introduces the fundamentals and importance of electric machine condition monitoring to help minimize downtime and maximize lifespan. An overview of the different types of faults encountered during electric machine operation and their characteristics from a diagnostic perspective is first presented. This is followed by a general review of the leading condition monitoring techniques presently utilized and researched for electric machine applications. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

DFIG current and controller signals' angular shaft misalignment signature' an experimental case study
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2020) Wang, Y.; Sarma, N.; Mohammed, A.; Djurovic, S.
with the continuous increase in wind turbine generator size the monitoring and diagnosis of drive train shaft misalignment is of growing importance, as this condition contributes to as much as 30% of turbine's downtime. Machine current signature analysis has been widely investigated in conventional machinery as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for shaft misalignment, via spectrum analysis of the stator current signal. This paper reports a practical case study of misalignment fault signature manifestation in the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) controller signals spectra, with a view to assessing the feasibility of low cost and non-invasive controller signal analysis based misalignment diagnosis. The study employs a laboratory test rig to undertake a series of tests to analyze the sensitivity of controller signals to a specific angular misalignment condition, and hence evaluate and characterize the manifestation of its spectral signatures. © 2020 IEEE.

Model Predictive Controlled Application of Power Management Algorithm for Battery Energy Storage System Providing Frequency Ancillary Service
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2023) Akpinar, K.N.; Sarma, N.; Gundogdu, B.; Ozgonenel, O.
The active power that must be provided in accordance with frequency ancillary service regulations when battery energy storage systems participate in the frequency ancillary service is modelled in this study using a Model Predicted Controlled (MPC) 2-Level Voltage Source Converter (2L-VSC). The reference active power for the 2 MW battery energy storage system was determined using the rule-based power management method, and the outcome was then used as the Model Predicted Control's input data. The output power for the MPC 2L-VSC, whose simulation study was conducted in the Simulink, successfully remained within the active power-frequency envelope in the frequency ancillary service regulation, and the demanded power was delivered by using the battery state of charge (SOC) value optimally. © 2023 IEEE.

Suppression of Conducted Emissions in Three-Phase Adjustable Drive Systems
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2023) Genc, S.; Sarma, N.; Gundogdu, B.; Ozgonenel, O.; Gezegin, C.; Terzi, U.K.
The fundamental issue with high switching power converters is electromagnetic interference. The converter design must be electromagnetically compliant for an operation to be secure. Filters play a crucial role in mitigating electromagnetic interference (EMI) within three-phase systems. This paper presents examining the electromagnetic interference associated with a three-phase inverter interconnected to the grid. The reported measurements were taken after the filter and applied with three-phase adjustable drive system for 9-150kHz frequency ranges. Therefore, experimental evidence supports the EMI filter's noise attenuation. In conclusion, the presented study fills in the gaps measuring uncertainties for three-phase emissions, assisting engineers in the design of three-phase converters. © 2023 IEEE.
