Metaphorical Perceptions of Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School Students Regarding Concept of Mathematics
(Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi, 2024) Kazak, Ender; Koca, Zuhal
The study aims to determine the metaphorical perceptions of the vocational and technical Anatolian high school students regarding the concept of mathematics. In this study, which has a qualitative interpretative paradigm, a phenomenological design was used. The study group of the research consists of 180 students attending the 9th, 10th and 11th grades of a vocational and technical Anatolian high school in the central district of Bolu province in the 2022-2023 academic year. The criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used for the selection of the participants in the study. The research data were obtained when the participants completed the sentence "Mathematics is like ……… because ……..". Content analysis was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research, it was seen that the students produced 151 valid metaphors related to the concept of mathematics. The metaphors produced were examined in three groups as positive metaphors, negative metaphors and neither positive nor negative metaphors. “life” and “water” metaphors are the most common among positive metaphors, “life”, “labyrinth” and “game” metaphors are the most common among negative metaphors, and “life” and “grape” metaphors are the most common among neither positive nor negative metaphors used. The metaphors in question were examined according to their common features and reasons for use, and were grouped under 20 categories. The conceptual categories of "instructive" in positive metaphorical perceptions, "unfinished" in negative metaphorical perceptions, and "variable" in neither positive nor negative metaphorical perceptions have the most metaphors. It has been determined that the students generally have negative metaphorical perceptions. Teachers can be recommended to organize the mathematics lesson according to the level of the student, to use the skills of attracting the student's attention well, to know whether the student is ready or not, and to relate the topics covered to daily life.
