Rapid diagnosis of vaginitis: Conventional Methods Versus Nucleic Acid Hybridization Techniques

The aim of the present study was to compare the results of nucleic acid hybridization technique with microscopic evaluation and culturing in determination of Candida spp, Gardnerella. vaginalis and Trichomonas. vaginalis. 24 patients with vaginitis complaints were enrolled to the study. The samples were obtained from the posterior vaginal fornix. All samples were evaluated by wet mount preparation, Gram staining, bacterial and yeast culturing and hybridization techniques. Hybridization was found to be 85.7 % sensitive and 100 % specific for Gardnerella vaginalis, and 100 % sensitive and specific for both Candida species and Trichomonas vaginalis. Since gynecologists prefer to begin the treatment immediately in most cases with vaginitis, rapid techniques such as nucleic acid hybridization technique can be employed as well as conventional methods for diagnosis.
