Evaluation of Spatial Design Practices in Tortum Waterfall in the Context of Sustainability of Geological Heritage

Tortum Waterfall is one of the most important waterfalls in Turkey and the world with its geological, geomorphological and physiographic features. These properties not only make Tortum Waterfall important but also make it a part of the geological heritage. However, spatial design practices carried out in and around Tortum Waterfall make the protection and transfer of this heritage to future generations questionable. This study was conducted to evaluate the spatial design practices in Tortum Waterfall in the context of the sustainability of geological heritage. Within this scope, a survey was conducted with a sample group of 250 people including local people, visitors and experts. The results of the study showed that the participants think that the spatial design practices carried out in Tortum Waterfall do not contribute to the sustainability of geoheritage. In addition, the mean score of the visitor group differed significantly from the mean scores of the local people and expert groups. The study made recommendations for the protection and sustainable use of Tortum Waterfall as a geoheritage site.
