ANALYSIS OF THE DISCONTINUOUS PWM CONTROLLED D-STATCOM FOR REACTIVE POWER COMPENSATION APPLICATIONS
(Univ Osijek, Tech Fac, 2014) Ertay, Muhammed Mustafa; Zengin, Ahmet
The scope of this paper covers the investigations of discontinuous PWM (DPWM) control of the Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator (D-STATCOM). Various DPWM methods have been widely used in motor drives for controlling the inverter and reducing power losses. With the rising demand for energy, energy efficiency has currently become an issue of vital importance. As a result, the use of the D-STATCOM in distribution systems is becoming increasingly common. In this study, DPWM methods were used for the D-STATCOM inner control. For the outer control, phase angle control was used and PWM methods were adapted to this control algorithm. In addition, conventional continuous PWM (CPWM) methods were applied to the D-STATCOM for comparison purposes. All simulations were performed in the MATLAB-Simulink software environment. Power losses have a significant impact on the D-STATCOM; therefore, a simulation model was developed to calculate the conduction and switching losses in order to investigate the effectiveness of DPWM methods in reducing the D-STATCOM power losses. Results showed that the utilization of different DPWM methods in the D-STATCOM was suitable for high modulation indexes. This clearly illustrates that, according to different DPWM methods, a reduction of from 14 % up to 50 % in D-STATCOM switching losses can be achieved. Furthermore, this study proposes the use of CPWM and DPWM methods in low and high modulation indexes, respectively, according to the requirements of the distribution system.

Harmonic analysis and passive power filter design for a medium voltage power system according to IEEE standards
(Sila Science, 2012) Ertay, Muhammed Mustafa; Duru, H. Tarık
Harmonic current and voltage distortions on plant distribution systems are becoming an increasingly serious problem as sources of harmonic currents increase. Passive power filters have been commonly used to limit the harmonic currents in distribution systems. In this paper firstly harmonic analysis of an industrial system has been done. After the analysis, passive power filter design for limitation of current harmonics and power factor correction is realized taking into consideration IEEE 519-1992 and IEEE Std 18 (TM)-2002 standards. Effectiveness of designed single tuned filters in reducing the harmonic distortions is investigated through computer simulations. Simulation studies have been performed in Matlab-Simulink environment

Real-Time Simulations for Testing of a Low-Voltage Microgrid with MMC-DSTATCOM
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2022) Ertay, Muhammed Mustafa; Chowdhury, Dhiman; Biswas, Md Multan; Ginn, Herbert L.
This paper presents a real-time simulation model of a low-voltage (LV) microgrid comprising renewable energy sources, a battery energy storage system (BESS) and a modular multilevel converter (MMC)-distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) for reactive power compensation to support a distribution network and utility loads. The model is developed using MATLAB/Simulink® and the real-time test environment is composed of an OPAL-RT simulator. In offline and RT-Lab-based online simulations, the model is investigated for grid-feeding, grid-supporting, grid-following and grid-forming operations of the microgrid inverters. The MMC-DSTATCOM operation is tested for different reactive power control scenarios both in grid-following and grid-forming modes. In this study, one of the major challenges that affects real-time simulations is employing switching power electronic converter models and their controls with significantly low overruns in the RT-Lab platform. It is observed that microgrid and switching converter operations are successfully realized in real-time simulations with significantly low overruns for 25mumathrm{s} step-size. © 2022 IEEE.

Simulated annealing based passive power filter design for a medium voltage power system
(Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l, 2013) Ertay, Muhammed Mustafa; Tosun, Salih; Zengin, Ahmet
Power quality problems on distribution systems are becoming an increasingly important issue because the increase of harmonic current sources not only caused poor supply quality but also can be damaged the system components. As is known passive power filters (PPFs) have been mostly used to restrict the harmonic currents in industrial distribution systems. Aim of this paper is PPF design according to IEEE standards by using simulated annealing (SA) which is one of the heuristic techniques. The main idea behind the PPF design is the minimization of rms current of distribution bus. First of all harmonic analysis of studied industrial power system has been done. After this analysis, PPF design for mitigation of current harmonics and also power factor correction is realized firstly by using the try and error (TAE) method taking into consideration IEEE 519-1992 standards. Similar to that PPF design is realized by using proposed SA method. Effectiveness and convenience of the designed single tuned PPFs in limitation of the harmonic distortions are analyzed via computer simulations. Also the effects of frequency deviation on PPFs are studied. Simulation studies are carried out in Matlab/Simulink environment. © 2013 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved.

(Kaunas Univ Technology, 2012) Ertay, Muhammed Mustafa; Aydoğmuş, Zafer
    M. M. Ertay, Z. Aydogmus. The Simulation Study and Dynamic Analysis of Unified Power Flow Controller for Industrial and Educational Purposes // Electronics and Electrical Engineering. - Kaunas: Technologija, 2012. - No. 5(121). - P. 109-114. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is versatile and one of the advanced FACTS devices. In this study, dynamic analysis of UPFC is realized by MATLAB-Simulink simulation. For this purpose, a simulation model is presented that enable to be analysed of effects of device to power system in detail. Simulation model is a based on shunt current injection and series voltage injection. UPFC system dynamic model is based on a d-q synchronous reference frame. Developed simulation model enables to be analyzed effects of UPFC and the other converter based FACTS devices (STATCOM, SSSC,IPFC) to power system very simply. Besides, it can be used for education purpose in graduate studies which is about converter based FACTS devices. On the other hand, it can be used for industrial purpose in terms of power system engineers' investigations of effects of UPFC to power system. Simulated UPFC system consists of a load, UPFC and a power system with two machines. In simulation studies, functions of UPFC such as terminal voltage regulation and automatic power flow control is analysed and results are presented in case of graphics.
