Öğe The Frequency and Clinical Features of RSV Infection among Babies Hospitalized with the Diagnosis of Lower Respiratory Tract Infection(Düzce Üniversitesi, 2009) Hatipoğlu, Sami; Arıca, Seçil; Çelik, Yalçın; Öztora, Serdar; Şevketoğlu, Esra; Erkum, TolgaAim: In this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency and clinical features of RSV infection among babies hospitalized with the diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infection. Methods: The study is executed between January 2006 and April 2006. In 80 children between 0-24 months of age, who were hospitalized in our Pediatrics Clinic with the diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infection based on clinical and laboratory findings, RSV was investigated as agent, using immunoassay method with Respi-Strip RSV (Coris Bioconcept) kit, and their clinical features were determined. Results: It was determined that 35% of the children had RSV infection. The families of RSV positive children were larger and the ages of their parents were higher. Comparing to RSV negative children, the frequency of fever and nasal mucus were significantly higher and CRP levels were more frequently positive in RSV positive children. Conclusion: Among cases of lower respiratory infections hospitalized in our clinic, we determined a high rate of RSV infections, which is concordant with literature. Determination of RSV infection in these patients can prevent unnecessary use of antibiotics, hospital infections due to viruses can be controlled more easily and antiviral therapy can be used when necessary. Because of these reasons, we planned to check RSV antigen routinely in patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infection
