Öğe Distribution of Intestinal Parasites Detected in Dr. Ersin Arslan Training and Research Hospital Microbiology Laboratory between 2016-2022; Pre-Pandemic and Post-Pandemic Evaluation(Düzce Üniversitesi, 2023) Özkeklikçi, Ahmet; Cirit, Osman SezerAim: In this study, stool samples of patients who applied to the microbiology laboratory of Gaziantep Dr. Ersin Arslan Training and Research Hospital between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2022 with various gastrointestinal complaints were examined. It was aimed to investigate the distribution of intestinal parasites over the years and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.Material and Methods: In the study, the results of 15107 stool and 164 cellophane tape samples were analyzed retrospectively. After macroscopic examination, stool samples were examined at 100 and 400 magnifications with native-lugol and salt water flotation methods. Samples containing Entamoeba histolytica or suspected protozoa were examined by trichrome staining method. Results: One or more parasites were detected in 1673 stool samples. Parasites were detected in (n=875) 10.54% of male patients and (n=798) 11.73% of female patients. The most common parasite was identified as 4.67% (n=712) Blastocystis hominis. Entamoeba coli was found in 369 (2.42%) cases, Giardia intestinalis was found in 215 (1.41%) cases, and E. histolytica/dispar was found in 182 (1.19%) cases. More than one parasite was seen together in 139 (8.3%) of the stool samples we found positive, and E. histolytica/dispar- B. hominis association was found most frequently. Helminth eggs were detected in 32 (19.51%) of 164 cellophane tape samples (19 Enterobius vermicularis, 13 Taenia spp. eggs). It has been determined that the incidence of parasites by years, which was 13.77% in 2016, decreased to 8.36% in 2022.Conclusion: Despite the developments in socioeconomic areas and the investments of local governments in sanitation, parasitic diseases show their existence as an important public health problem in our province.
