Evolution of the Western-Centric Ways of Seeing Throughout History and Its Influences on Space Perception
    (Düzce Üniversitesi, 2022) Can, Eren
Ways of seeing have changed from the past to the present with factors such as society, religion, culture, and technology. In order to understand the dynamics of this change, it is important to examine the art of the period and its place in the history of thought. In this research, the influence of ways of seeing on spatial perception was examined through a comparative historical research method within the bounds of possibility of examples. For this analysis, depictions and architectural representation works were selected from each period examined. These examples were interpreted with references of critical thinkers during the relevant period in question. While the representation and image of space provide information about seeing regimes of periods, hypothesized that it includes the knowledge of how the space is perceived. In the light of this presupposition, the subjective, objective, and imaginary dimensions of space perceptions of the periods which examined in the research were revealed by following the observer and space relationship change in ways of seeing. Although the importance of the eye has never been lost in terms of the evolutionary hierarchy of the senses, different vision regimes and spatial perceptions have progressed by the suppressing the previous dominant thoughts. Today, occular-centric approaches which dominate the space perception along the history can cause commodification of space by reducing the body-space interaction.
