    Assessment of environmental and atmospheric impacts of stubble burning in Mardin-Diyarbakır (Southeastern of Türkiye): a remote sensing approach

    This study investigated the environmental, atmospheric and human impacts of a stubble-burning incident on June 20, 2024, in K & ouml;ksalan village, S & uuml;rendal neighborhood, T & uuml;rkiye, using advanced remote sensing techniques. Stubble burning, a prevalent agricultural practice, contributes significantly to air pollution and soil degradation, presenting serious environmental and public health risks. Sentinel-2A satellite imagery was employed to delineate the affected area, which spanned 248.77 hectares, comprising 134.40 hectares of moderate-low severity, 47.00 hectares of low severity and 67.37 hectares of unburned land. Sentinel-5P satellite data revealed a notable increase in sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations, peaking at 49.6 mu g/m(3) during the fire and declining to 13.0 mu g/m(3) post-incident. Statistical evaluations demonstrated strong validation of the remote sensing approach, with a correlation coefficient (R-2) of 0.86, an index of agreement (IA) of 0.89, and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.31 mu g/m(3). Wind speeds of 15 to 28 km/h, predominantly directed northward, influenced pollutant dispersion, resulting in SO2 concentrations reaching a maximum of 67.7 mu g/m(3) in oak and grass-dominated areas, compared to 13.3 mu g/m(3) in agricultural zones. The stubble-burning incident, which caused 15 fatalities and 78 injuries, underscores the critical need for sustainable residue management practices, enhanced public awareness, and rigorous enforcement of legal regulations to mitigate the adverse impacts of stubble burning in T & uuml;rkiye.

    GGE biplot analysis of genotype by environment interaction of barley cultivars

    This study was conducted out to determine grain yield, yield components, and some quality charecteristics of 17 barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes at six environments in Thrace region of Turkey, using principal component analysis (PCA) and genotype (G) + genotype x environment interaction (GGE) biplot analysis to define the genotypes with higher yield and desirable quality traits during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 cropping seasons. Mean values of the genotypes varied from 5106-6753 kg.ha-1 for grain yield, 103.4-117.1 days for heading date, 94.6-110.3 cm for plant height, 6.26-10.07 cm for spike length, 25.0-75.5 number of grains per spike, 1.20-2.99 g grain weight per spike, 35.0-50.5 g for thousand kernel weight and 56.4-64.1 kg.hl-1 for test weight. The relationships among the examined traits and genotypes was 53.9 % as defined by PC biplot analyses. GGE biplot analysis represented 94.77 % of the relationship of G + GE for grain yield. Two mega circles were formed according to grain yield, Zeus genotype for E1, E2 and E5 locations and Arcanda genotype for E3, E4 and E6 locations were determined as prominent genotypes. Zeus and Arcanda cultivars have been identified as the most ideal and stable genotypes.

    GT Biplot and Cluster Analysis of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Germplasm from Various Geographical Regions Based on Agro-Morphological Traits

    Barley, an ancient crop, was vital for early civilizations and has historically been served as food and beverage. Today, it plays a major role as feed for livestock. Breeding modern barley varieties for high yield and quality has created significant genetic erosion. This highlights the importance of tapping into genetic and genomic resources to develop new improved varieties that can overcome agricultural bottlenecks and increase barley yield. In the current study, 75 barley genotypes were evaluated for agro-morphological traits. The relationships among these traits were determined based on genotype by trait (GT) biplot analysis for two cropping years (2021 and 2022). This study was designed as a randomized complete block experiment with four replications. The variation among genotypes was found to be significant for all traits. The correlation coefficient and GT biplot revealed that grain yield (GY) was positively correlated with the number of grains per spike (NGS), the grain weight per spike (GW), and the thousand kernel weight (1000 KW). However, the test weight (TW) was negatively correlated with the heading date (HD). Hierarchical analysis produced five groups in the first year, four groups in the second year, and four groups over the average of two years. Genotypes by trait biplot analysis highlighted G25, G28, G61, G73, and G74 as promising high-yielding barley genotypes. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the GT biplot as a valuable approach for identifying superior genotypes with contrasting traits. It is considered that this approach could be used to evaluate the barley genetic material in breeding programs.
