    Oral Mucosal Manifestation in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare diabetic and nondiabetic subjects regard tooral manifestation such as oral mucosal lesions, burning mouth syndrome, xerostomia, and tastechange.Material and methods: A total of 120 patients (40 with type 1 diabetes mellitus, 40 type 2diabetes mellitus and 40 control groups) were examined for oral mucosal lesions, burning mouthsyndrome, xerostomia, and taste change. A self-administered questionnaire was administered.Results: The diabetic group exhibited significantly higher prevalence and more severe drymouth, taste change, tongue coating, burning mouth syndrome and mucosa pain than thenondiabetic group. The prevalence of dry mouth was 27.5% in the control group, 70% in thetype 2 diabetic group and 67.5% in type 1diabetic group. The prevalence of taste change was5% in the control group, 67.5% in the type 2 diabetic group and 22.5% in type 1diabetic group.The prevalence of mucosa pain was 30% in the type 2 diabetic group and 12.5% in type 1diabeticgroup. The prevalence of tongue coating was 5% in the control group, 52.5% in the type 2diabetic group and 30% in type 1diabetic group. The prevalence of burning mouth syndromewas 2.5% in the control group, 42.5% in the type 2 diabetic group and 35% in type 1diabeticgroup. Conclusions: This study reveals that diabetic patients exhibited a potentially higher risk for drymouth, taste change, tongue coating, burning mouth syndrome and mucosa pain
