ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF ONLINE EDUCATION ON FIRST AND EMERGENCY AID PROGRAM STUDENTS
(Paramedik Eğitiminde Standardizasyon ve Akreditasyon Derneği, 2023) Bekircan, Esra; Boğan, Fatma; Yıldırım, Emrullah
Objective: This research was conducted to evaluate the effects of online education on first and emergency aid program students. Material and Methods: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 505 students studying in the first and emergency aid programs of four different universities in Turkey. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire prepared in line with the literature. The data are analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Science 25 program and evaluated; number, percentage, mean, standard deviation were used. Results: 53.86% of the students stated that they had no contact with real patients during the education process, 80.20% stated that they did not do any application courses face-to-face, approximately 60% of the students stated that the courses were not efficient in distance education, their learning needs were not met and they did not feel at the level to take care of the patient due to distance education. 64.16% of the students stated that they were afraid of making mistakes when starting work because they were learning remotely and 53.47% were afraid of harming the patient. Approximately 60% of students stated that distance learning was not suitable for the first and emergency aid program. Conclusion: It was concluded that the students found the training they received in the online education processes inadequate and accordingly they were afraid of making mistakes in business life and harming the patient.

The Effect of Bibliotherapy on Primary School Students' Health Literacy and Emergency Service Awareness: Single Group Quasi-Experimental Study
(Türkiye Acil Tıp Derneği, 2025) Bekircan, Esra; Boğan, Fatma; Yartaşı, Yasin Haydar; Baykurt, Senem; Boğan, Mustafa
Aim: The aim of this study was to enhance primary school students' knowledge levels concerning health literacy and awareness of emergency department services through the use of bibliotherapy. Material and Methods: This study employed a pre-test and post-test, one-group quasi-experimental design. The study sample consisted of 62 fourth-grade primary school students. Data were collected using the "Personal Information Form", "Health Literacy Scale for School-Age Children", and "Structured Questions on Emergency Service Awareness". A paired samples t-test was used to compare the dependent groups. The relationship between dependent categorical variables was examined using the McNemar test. A significance level of 0.05 was used as the criterion for interpreting whether the obtained values were statistically significant. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test scores of primary school students regarding their knowledge levels related to emergency department awareness (t61= -2.29; p<0.05). The increase in students' knowledge about triage colors in the emergency department and their understanding of the concept of triage was also statistically significant following bibliotherapy intervention (p<0.05). The improvement in knowledge regarding appropriate situations for emergency department visits was also found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). However, bibliotherapy was not found to have a statistically significant effect on the health literacy levels of primary school students, as there was no significant difference between their pre-test and post-test scores (p>0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded that bibliotherapy was effective in increasing primary school students' knowledge about the appropriate use of emergency services. In line with the topics covered in the bibliotherapy text, students were found to have learned the emergency department triage color codes, understood the concept of triage, and improved their knowledge of situations that require emergency care. These findings suggest that bibliotherapy-based course content can be developed to raise awareness among children—beginning from primary education—regarding the appropriate and effective use of healthcare services. Such initiatives should be supported by a multidisciplinary approach that integrates emergency medicine, psychiatric nursing, and educational sciences.

Retrospective study on suicide attempts among psychiatric emergencies admitted to the emergency department of a Regional hospital in Turkey
(Springer, 2024) Bogan, Mustafa; Bekircan, Esra; Bogan, Fatma; Kara, Neslihan; Kara, Ali Can
IntroductionThe aim of this study was to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of psychiatric emergencies presenting to emergency departments (ED), the provisional diagnoses and reasons for consultation by emergency physicians, and to determine the rate of suicide attempts among patients presenting to emergency departments for psychiatric emergencies.MethodsThe records of all patients aged 18 years and older admitted to the emergency department of the Department of Emergency Medicine, a tertiary hospital, with either a pre-existing psychiatric diagnosis or a new psychiatric provisional diagnosis made by emergency physicians between January 2020 and December 2023 were reviewed.ResultsAccording to the data obtained in the study, it was determined that the most common provisional diagnoses made by emergency physicians in psychiatric emergencies were suicide attempts (41.88%), agitation (21.94%), schizophrenia (8.44%), psychosis (7.91%) and manic attack (6.54%). It was found that 49.3% of psychiatric emergencies resulted in discharge and 25.5% resulted in hospitalisation. Among the provisional diagnoses, depression, mutism and sleep disorders were most commonly associated with refusal of treatment, while depression and suicide were the most common reasons for hospitalisation. Among psychiatric emergency patients who attempted suicide, medication, sharp objects and chemicals were the most common substances ingested.DiscussionIn this study, it was determined that a great portion of the emergency psychiatric cases admitted to the emergency department consisted of patients who attempted suicide. However, due to the crowdedness and fast pace of emergency departments, it is understood that in psychiatric emergencies, epidemiological profile data are missing in the files of the cases and detailed medical history cannot be obtained from the patients We think that recording better data of patient who admitted a psychiatric condition to the emergency department will provide better information about the patients in future visits and improve the care to be provided. Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses recommend the implementation of emergency department-based rehabilitation programs for these patients. Psychiatric emergencies presenting to emergency departments should not be overlooked in terms of suicide risk.Psychiatric emergencies who have attempted suicide should be closely followed at frequent intervals.Emergency department staff should be educated about psychiatric emergencies and suicide risk.
