Collocational Awareness in Teaching Turkish as a Mother Tongue and Collocational Competencies of Middle School Students

In this study, we attempted to describe the collocation errors found in the sentences of middle school students during vocabulary teaching activities in Turkish textbooks. For this purpose, the research was designed as a case study. The participants were consisted of 100 students attending a middle school. In order to collect data, the participants were asked to write sentences about the targeted words for four weeks in accordance with the vocabulary teaching activities in the Turkish textbooks. The sentences written by the students were analyzed in terms of collocation errors. The results of the study revealed that middle school students could not use the collocational vocabulary of their mother tongue sufficiently for the targeted words. Thus, they made structural and lexical collocation errors when using borrowed words in Turkish from foreign languages or Turkish words that are not used frequently and widely nowadays. Furthermore, it was observed that there was no collocation awareness in the vocabulary teaching activities in the mother tongue textbooks. Hence, we suggest that the target words should be handled and taught together with its collocations in the text, and a collocational method should be adopted in teaching vocabulary in the mother tongue.
