    Weed Species Problem in Outdoor Ornamental Plant Nurseries and Suggestions for the Existing Weed Problems in Sakarya Province, Turkey

    The Sakarya province is a significant area for the production of outdoor ornamental plants by providing one-third of their total production in Turkey and two-thirds of those in the Marmara region. In the crop areas of the province, weeds cause losses in yield, quality and labour. Within the scope of this study, weed species problem in outdoor ornamental plant nurseries in Turkey and the prevalence and density of these species were investigated for the first time. Weed species, their density and frequency have been investigated at first time in Turkey. For this target, this survey study was conducted in 2017-2018 in the outdoor ornamental nurseries in the Sakarya province to determine the weed species, which are a significant problem for outdoor ornamental plant production areas and their prevalence and density. As a result of the study, 33 families and 92 weed species belonging to 77 genera were recorded in the nurseries. Due to the being more than five in per square meter and half of the nurseries, the most common and dense weed species in the production areas are: Conyza canadensis (L.) Cron., Sonchus asper (L.) Hill, Chenopodium album L., Convolvulus arvensis L., Euphorbia peplus L., Equisetum giganteum L., Astragalus balansae Boiss., Melilotus officinalis (L.) Desr., Epilobium angustifolium L., Plantago major L., Alopecurus myosuroides Huds., Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop., Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. B., Elymus repens (L.) Gould., Setaria viridis (L.) P. B., Polygonum aviculare L., Rumex acetosella L., Portulaca oleracea L., Anagallis arvensis L. and Anagallis foemina Miller. As a result, it is determined that a large number of weed species are dominant in the production gardens. More attention should be paid to integrated weed management to reduce existing problems with these weeds.
