    Agents of Change: The Role of the Peer Education Program in Preventing Adolescent Substance Abuse

    In recent years, peer education programs (PEPs) have put this effect to use in a positive way by providing peers that constitute positive role models for each other. Accordingly, this study was carried out to determine the effect of a PEP on the basic knowledge of adolescents about addiction and on the level of self-efficacy that is needed to avoid substance abuse. The pre-test/post-test design of this semi-experimental study used a sample of 9th year students at three high schools in Duzce, Turkey. Peer educator training (PET) with an interactively structured program was completed within a total of 20 hours. The peer educators (PEs) then implemented the program for three months to groups of 14-16 adolescents. Following program, it was determined that incidence of smoking just for once was significantly decreased and incidences of using ecstasy and non-prescription drugs just for once significantly increased. Significant increases were observed in the attitude scores of self-efficacy scale at three high schools following program. This study showed the effectiveness and applicability of the PEP in preventing substance abuse among high-school adolescents.

    Comparison of central corneal thickness and intraocular pressure measured with two different tono/pachymeter devices in non-glaucomatouse children

    Purpose: The goal of this research is to compare the intraocular pressure (IOP) and the mean central corneal thickness (CCT) values obtained from the measurements with Nidek NT-530P and Canon TX-20P devices with the values obtained by ultrasound pachymetry (UP) and Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) in children. Methods: This prospective study was conducted with 119 healthy children. The measurements were repeated three times for each eye. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to assess the correlation between the measurements obtained from different devices. The Bland-Altman plot was used to analyze the agreement between two different devices graphically. The measurements were taken in the same order in all subjects: TX-20P, NT-530P, UP, and GAT. Results: The mean age of the children was 10.1 +/- 3.2 (6-17) years. The mean CCT values for the eyes were 568.90 and 569.68 (TX-20P), 571.44 and 566.37 (NT-530P), 564.77 and 564.67 mu m UP, (right and left, respectively). The highest correspondence observed for CCT was between UP and NT-530P devices (ICC, 0.982, the left eye). The mean IOP measurements for Canon TX-20P, NT-530P, and GAT were 16.5 +/- 3.2, 16.3 +/- 3.2, and 16.8 +/- 3.6 mmHg for the right eyes, respectively, while those for the left eyes were 16.6 +/- 3.1, 16.2 +/- 3.3, and 16.8 +/- 3.7 mmHg. The highest correspondence was noted between measurements obtained using GAT and Nidek NT-530P devices (ICC, 0.945, in the left eye). Conclusion: Tono/pachymetry devices in the healthy children are provides significant agreements with the gold standard methods for IOP and CCT measurements.     Comparison of fast regression algorithms in large datasets

    The aim is to compare the performances of fast regression methods, namely dimensional reduction of correlation matrix (DRCM), nonparametric dimensional reduction of correlation matrix (N-DRCM), variance inflation factor (VIF) regression, and robust VIF (R-VIF) regression in the presence of mul-ticollinearity and outliers problems. In all simulation-scenarios, all the target variables were chosen for final models using four methods. The DRCM and N-DRCM are the methods that reach the final model in the shortest time, respectively. The time to reach the final model using R-VIF regression was approxi-mately twice shorter than that of VIF regression. In each method, as the number of variables and the level of outliers increased, the time taken to reach the final model increased. When the level of multicollinear-ity and the number of variables (p > 500) increased, the times to reach the final models using DRCM in datasets with outliers were slightly shorter than the those of N-DRCM. The largest numbers of noise variables were selected to the model using DRCM and N-DRCM, but the least number of them were selected to the model using the R-VIF regression. The RMSE values obtained using DRCM, N-DRCM and VIF regression were similar in each scenario. As a result of the real dataset, the final model selected using R-VIF regression had the highest R-2. It also had the lowest RMSE value among those obtained with other approaches excluding VIF regression. As such, the R-VIF regression method demonstrated a better performance than the others in all datasets.

    The Effect of Treatment on Weight Gain in Iron Deficiency Anemia and Its Association with Ghrelin and Hepcidin Levels

    Aim: Although loss of appetite in iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and weight gain during treatment are common complaints, there are very few studies in adults. This study aimed to determine the levels of ghrelin, one of the appetite-related hormones, and hepcidin, one of the main regulators of iron metabolism, in IDA, and to examine the effects of treatment on weight gain and the levels of these hormones. Material and Methods: Eighty-seven adult patients with IDA and a control group of 50 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Anthropometric measurements and blood samples were obtained from the patient and control groups before treatment, and repeated after treatment in the IDA group. Results: No significant difference was found in terms of weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist-to-hip ratio between groups but there was a significant increase in weight and BMI, in the patient group after treatment (both p<0.001). Pre-treatment hepcidin and ghrelin levels of the patient group were significantly lower than the control group (p<0.001, and p=0.026, respectively), and hepcidin levels increased significantly after treatment (p<0.001). The increase in ghrelin was not statistically significant but showed a positive weak correlation with both weight (r=0.254, p=0.018) and BMI (r=0.231, p=0.031) increase. Hepcidin levels were not correlated with weight and BMI changes. Conclusion: These findings revealed low levels of ghrelin and hepcidin in adults with IDA and an increase in weight and BMI with treatment. Hepcidin increased with treatment but was not correlated with weight gain, ghrelin was weakly correlated.

    The Effects of Long-term Growth Hormone Treatment on Ocular Findings

    Purpose This study aimed to examine the long-term changes in anterior chamber depth (ACD), central corneal thickness (CCT), axial length (AxL), peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFLT), peripapillary ganglion cell layer - inner plexiform layer (GCL-IPL) thickness, and peripapillary choroidal thickness (ChT) after rhGH replacement treatment in paediatric patients with IGHD, compared to healthy controls.Methods Twenty-two children with IGHD including 12 girls and 10 boys were enrolled in the study group, and 30 (16 girls, 14 boys) healthy children composed the control group. A detailed ophthalmological examination was performed for each participant. ACD, CCT, AxL, peripapillary RNFLT, GCL-IPL thickness and ChT measurements were performed before the rhGH replacement treatment and in the 12th month of the post-treatment period, as well as the corresponding visits in the control group. AxL ultrasound pachymetry (CCT), peripapillary RNFL thickness, peripapillary RNFLT, GCL-IPL thickness, and peripapillary ChT parameters were measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.Results The mean age of the groups were similar (p = 0.143). 12-month CCT, ACD, and AxL measurements of the study group showed significantly higher results than the pre-treatment measurements (p = 0.005, p = 0.024, and p = 0.002, respectively). Similarly, the mean RNFLT and ChT measurements of the study group obtained from all sectors were significantly higher in the 12th-month visit (p < 0.001 for both) other than the RNFLT, and GCL-IPL thickness measurements (p > 0.05 for all). However, all these parameters were similar at pre- and post-treatment visits in the control group (p > 0.05 for all). The mean pre-treatment values of all these parameters were significantly lower in the study group compared to the control group (p < 0.05 for all), other than the RNFLT, GCL-IPL thickness measurements (p > 0.05 for all), while the mean post-treatment values of all these parameters in both groups were similar at month 12 (p > 0.05 for all).Conclusion GH replacement treatment in childhood may play an important role in the development of the neural retina and can be effective on the anterior segment, RNFLT and ChT measurements.

    The effects of smoking on the placentas of smoker mothers in terms of MPO, MMP-9 and FGF

    Aim: Smoking during pregnancy remains a common habit. Pregnant smokers harm both themselves and their fetus. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate oxidative stress and angiogenic effects of smoking on pregnant smokers by analyzing FGF, MMP-9, and MPO levels. Material and Methods: The placentas of 68 pregnant women which referred to the pathology laboratory between the years 2010 and 2011 were included in the study. Of the total, 28 women were smokers (S) and 40 women were non-smokers (NS). The FGF, MMP-9, and MPO immunostaining of placental tissues were examined by manual microarray study. The number of cigarettes smoked, age, systemic disease rate, mean abortus number, blood pressure, hemoglobin and hematocrit, Apgar, and pathological parameters were also evaluated. Results: Statistically significant positive relationships were found between S and NS groups in terms of MMP-9 staining (grade 1) (p=0.039). There was no MMP-9 staining in S group. Systemic diseases were more frequent in S than NS group (p=0.049). There was no statistically significant relationship between other parameters. Discussion: The effects of smoking on the fetus have been demonstrated with MMP-9. More comprehensive studies are needed to reveal the relationship between fetus and smoking.

    Statistical Properties of Sampling Distributions of Different Test Statistics for Different Measures of Change and a New Test: Simulation Study

    The aim of this study is to analyse the distribution characteristics of four different test statistics, namely the Mean/Standard Error of Mean (Mean/SEmean), Median/Interquartile Range (Median/IQR), Trimmed Mean/Standard Error of Mean (TrMean/SEmean), and Trimmed Mean/Interquartile Range (TrMean/IQR), which can be used to test two measures of change, namely percent change (PC) and modified symmetrised percent change (MSPC). To ensure the selection of suitable test statistics using the two measures of change, the observed type-I errors and powers of the test statistics have been computed. Results demonstrate that the sampling distributions of the four different test statistics by using PC values exhibit skewness. The Mean/SEmean statistic for the MSPC measure exhibits a two-peak value and platykurtic distribution, while the TrMean/SEmean statistic shows a leptokurtic distribution. The Median/IQR test yields robust and powerful results, especially for large sample sizes. This new statistical measure is referred to as the HS test.
