THE OTHER PLACE IN “THE ADVENTURES OF THE CAUCASUS” BY ALEXANDRE DUMAS
    (Düzce Üniversitesi, 2024) Altun, Sudan
Due to its strategic importance throughout history, the Caucasus has been the scene of the struggle for influence between Russia, Turkey and Europe. This region, which hosts various ethnic communities, where different languages are spoken together, has rich cultural diversity and natural beauties, has attracted the attention of world travellers for centuries. This vast area, geographically divided into North Caucasus and South Caucasus, is regarded as a region bearing the traces of the origins of European civilisation. In the 19th century, famous travellers visited the Caucasus, and in 1858, French writer and traveller Alexandre Dumas travelled to the region with his painter friend Moynet. At that time, with Russia’s efforts to maintain control over the Caucasus from St. Petersburg to Astrakhan, it was quite difficult to make a trip to these lands. However, although there were violent conflicts throughout the country, this did not affect Dumas’ decision at all. With the desire to see, live and write about this region inhabited by mountainous tribes known for their devotion to their freedom, Dumas set off without hesitation. In this work, published in Paris in 1859 under the title En Caucase (In the Caucasus), the author presents the geography of the Caucasus and how the region is reflected to the outside world from his own perspective. Within the scope of the study, a spatial analysis will be made by taking Dumas’s travels in the Caucasus as a reference, and discussing the ways in which he defines this geography as the ‘other space’, his methods of capturing and conveying the truth in his travel writings, and the descriptive narrative techniques he intensively uses. The fact that the places described are conveyed to the reader through the eyes of a French writer and traveller in his own language makes the work different and unique.
