Öğe Assessment of Nutritional Status and Metabolic Syndrome in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A Pilot Study(Gazi Univ, Fac Med, 2017) Tek, Nilüfer Acar; Şanlıer, Nevin; Akbulut, Gamze; Öneç, Kürşad; Erten, YaseminAim: Nutritional deficiencies and metabolic syndrome ( MS) is challenge in chronic kidney disease patients with peritoneal dialysis(PD). This study was planned in order to assess the nutritional status and metabolic syndrome in PD patients. Methods: This study was performed on clinically stable patients that were undergoing PD therapy. Energy and nutrient intakes were determined with consequently three days dietary record. The statement of MS was identified according to MS criteria adopted for PD patients. Results: The prevalence of MS was found 64.3%. The mean duration of PD in with-MS(35.4 +/- 25.23mo.) was lower than without- MS(44.3 +/- 30.99mo.) (p> 0.05). Patients with MS had significantly greater systolic/ diastolic blood pressure and lower high- density- lypoprotein cholesterol levels (HDL-C) ( p< 0.05). According to the body mass index (BMI), the 83.3% of patients' with- MS and 30% without- MS were found overweight and body fat mass was significant higher in patients with- MS(p< 0.05). The mean daily protein intakes per kilograms of body weight determined lower with- MS patients (0.8 +/- 0.25g/kg) than without- MS (0.9 +/- 0.29 g/kg). Conclusion: The prevalence of MS is remarkably high. The daily dietary energy and protein intakes were found under the recommended levels. Inadequate energy and protein intake increase loss of muscle mass and also excessive energy intake leads to obesity. Monitoring of nutritional status of PD patients is important both in prevention and progression of MS.Öğe Evaluation of the Effects of Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Adults on the Mental Well-Being During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Pilot Study(Düzce Üniversitesi, 2023) Çatak, Şenay; Şahin, Nursel; Akbulut, GamzeAim: A healthy diet supports the body's energy and physiological needs with adequate nutrients. The Mediterranean diet (MD) exemplifies balanced nutrition and can have protective effects on health. This research aims to evaluate the impact of adhering to the MD on the mental health of adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.Material and Methods: Data were collected through an online questionnaire including socio-demographic characteristics, the Mediterranean Diet Adequacy Scale (MEDAS), and the Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (SWEMWBS). The questionnaire was shared via social media or email using a link. The study included 129 individuals (52 men, 77 women) who responded approximately one week after the questionnaire was shared. Results: The mean age of individuals was 26.5±7.37. Most men (59.61%) had a normal weight, while most women (50.65%) were overweight or obese. The majority of individuals (58.14%) showed low adherence to the MD, with a mean MEDAS score of 7.0±1.92. The proportion of underweight or normal-weight individuals who consumed red meat (in men) and nuts (in women) was significantly higher compared to overweight or obese individuals. However, there was no statistically significant relationship between the MEDAS scores and mental well-being scores of individuals. Conclusion: Adequate and balanced nutrition is crucial for physical and psychological health, particularly during the pandemic. This study revealed low adherence to the MD among individuals. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to investigate the relationship between the MD and mental health during the pandemic period.
