    A Seminal Work in Chinese Linguistic Studies: Ma Shi Wentong

    Language studies have been conducted thoughout history in a variety of societies. In the early half of the 20th century, the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure is credited with founding modern linguistics. In the second half of the 20th century, Chomsky guided linguistic studies with his views and ideas.While the change of languages and the grouping of languages attracted attention in the 19th century, the systematic structure of languages, their rules and the principles that form the language began to attract attention in the 20th century. Developments in the field of linguistics in the West have begun to change the directions and dimensions of studies by affecting the languages of the world. Thus, the field of linguistics was divided into many sub-branches and extensive research started to be conducted. Although language studies were expanding quickly in the West, they ere carried out in China without deviating from custom. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, Chinese Linguistics was influenced by the West and had to adapt. Grammar studies began to be redefined and shaped under the influence of the West. Wentong was written in this period and is considered the first grammar book of modern Chinese linguistics. This work is very important for understanding Chinese grammar and linguistic studies. This work, which is very important for understanding Chinese grammar and linguistic studies, is also considered the first grammar book of Chinese Modern Linguistics. Examining the author’s perspective and the relationship between Chinese grammar studies and Western perspectives ist the goal of this study. In the study, the work analysis was carried out with descriptive research methods. Author Ma both benefited from Chinese language traditions, which have a history of two thousand years, and used Western grammatical definitions. From the time of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279), it was inspired by various treatises that described and classified various rhetorical pieces.
