Data was collected through interviews with middle school mathematics teachers and students and focus group interviews with students. The content analysis method is used to interpret data. Results reveal that the MU is perceived as a crucial lesson that improves mathematical thinking and attitude towards mathematics, develops collaborative learning skills. Also, considered an opportunity to exercise for central exams, which does not comply with the objectives of the MU course curriculum. On the other hand, the MU is considered unnecessary due to the lack of equipment, weak motivation caused by grading system, insufficient content of the course, and being conducted as a continuation of the math lesson. The students are guided by parents, teachers, and/or school administration during the selection process. In summary, contrary to the mission of an elective course, during the MU course selection process, students generally could not show their free will and could not choose the MU according to their interests and abilities. Also, there are cases where MU can be perceived as a study time outside of its purpose. © 2022. Milli Egitim.
